5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steve Witherspoon! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Winston Howard and Skip Squint.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Witherspoon throws a head kick that misses. Witherspoon throws a big shot that misses. Gunn moves out of range of the leg kick from Witherspoon. Witherspoon throws a head kick but Gunn moves out of range.
A head kick misses from Witherspoon. Gunn fails with a takedown attempt from distance. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gunn scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Gunn tries to advance to mount but can't. Witherspoon tries to escape but Gunn is in control.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Gunn throws a nice looking combination but Witherspoon bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Nice takedown defense from Witherspoon. No joy for Gunn on that attempt. Witherspoon misses with a head kick.
Steve Witherspoon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Witherspoon throws a sloppy head kick and Gunn moves out of range easily. Gunn looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Witherspoon is fending him off so far but Gunn persists. Nope, Witherspoon circles away and we're back to standing. Witherspoon throws a right hand that Gunn ducks under and follows up with a left that Gunn also avoids with ease.

Gunn closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Witherspoon to the mat! Witherspoon manages to get full guard. Gunn missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Gunn looking to pass the guard. Gunn won't allow Witherspoon to get back to his feet. Gunn wants to control from the top but Witherspoon keeps moving.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gunn thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Gunn drops back looking for a leg! Witherspoon is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Witherspoon manages to kick Gunn off! Gunn jumps back into Witherspoon's guard. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gunn accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Gunn drops back looking for a leg! Witherspoon is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Witherspoon manages to kick Gunn off! Gunn jumps back into Witherspoon's guard. Witherspoon really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gunn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Gunn tries to score a power double leg takedown but Witherspoon sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gunn somewhat. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gunn has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Gunn looking to ground and pound but Witherspoon is blocking nicely. Gunn throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Gunn bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Witherspoon's guard. Gunn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Gunn stands and throws Witherspoon's legs to the side, diving into side control. Gunn wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Witherspoon, who protects the arm well. Gunn is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Witherspoon is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over. Gunn prevents Witherspoon from escaping the position.
