Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Derek Merryweather (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mirosvaldo Karelin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Derek Merryweather looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mirosvaldo Karelin! The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Russell Pearce and Eddie Farnsworth.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Karelin stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Karelin wants it to stay on the feet. Merryweather looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Karelin throws a head kick that Merryweather semi-blocks.
Karelin throws a right and a left that Merryweather avoids nicely. Karelin shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Karelin winds up and cracks Merryweather with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Karelin works his way into side control. Merryweather is letting Karelin control him for a moment. Merryweather can't do much from the bottom here. Karelin lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Karelin controlling from side mount. Karelin tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! That's two minutes gone in the round. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. I looks like Karelin might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Karelin in side control lands a decent elbow. Karelin is working Merryweather over with some ground and pound from side control. Karelin controls the position from side control.

Merryweather on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Karelin decides to stand back up. Karelin steps back and let's Merryweather get back to his feet. Karelin swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Excellent takedown into side control there by Karelin. Karelin is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Merryweather's shoulder. That is not cool. Karelin's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Mirosvaldo Karelin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Karelin bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Karelin working the ground and pound. Karelin working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Karelin creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Merryweather is trying to get back to half guard. Merryweather manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Merryweather gets to his feet - back to striking we go! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Karelin fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Merryweather sprawls well initially but Karelin persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Karelin is looking for a kimura here.

Karelin lands a nice short elbow. Karelin looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Merryweather with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Karelin content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Karelin takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Merryweather is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Karelin scores with a couple of nice shots. Karelin lands with a punch from half guard.

The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Karelin seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Karelin prevents Merryweather from improving his position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Merryweather on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Merryweather wants to control but Karelin is keeping busy.
Karelin is nestled in close to Merryweather, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Karelin is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Merryweather shoots for a double leg takedown but Karelin sprawls well. He's pushed Merryweather's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Karelin shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Merryweather's guard. Karelin stands up over Merryweather, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Karelin seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Karelin stopping the sweep attempt from Merryweather. Merryweather is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Karelin defends well.

Karelin scoring with punches to the head and body. Karelin landing with the ground and pound. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Merryweather wants to sweep but no luck.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Karelin shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Merryweather manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Mirosvaldo Karelin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. That's time! Merryweather's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Both fighters are breathing heavily. Karelin lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Karelin has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Karelin lands a big shot there that rocks Merryweather but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Karelin has hold of Merryweather's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Merryweather manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Karelin can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Merryweather is looking to escape. Merryweather manages to regain half guard. Good work.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Merryweather wants to get back to full guard.

Merryweather gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Karelin to score an easy takedown into full guard. Derek Merryweather has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Karelin prevents Merryweather from getting back to his feet. Merryweather throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Merryweather has his foot on Karelin's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Karelin works his way back into a safe position though.
And that's the end of the fight! Mirosvaldo Karelin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Karelin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
