The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
El throws a right hand that Pearson ducks under and follows up with a left that Pearson also avoids with ease.
Nice takedown defense from El. No joy for Pearson on that attempt.
Pearson is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in El's half guard.
Pearson slips a nice elbow through El's hands, connecting with El's forehead.
Pearson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Pearson is nestled in close to El, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pearson wants to free his trapped foot but El is holding on for dear life with his legs.
El is looking to escape.

El is in trouble now - Pearson has advanced to mount!
Pearson lands with some strikes.
El's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if El can do anything to dispel that myth.
El is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Pearson breaks from El's wrist control and lands an elbow.
