PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Miguel Cotto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Antonio Cromartie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys are coming into the fight with injuries so let's see if that has a bearing on the fight. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Miguel Cotto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Antonio Cromartie!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Donald Grub and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cotto shoots in but no luck this time.
Cotto is breathing heavily.
Cromartie swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Cotto takes the fight into the clinch.

Cromartie breaks the clinch.

Cromartie feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Cotto keeping moving, preventing Cromartie from controlling successfully.
Cromartie might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Cotto kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Cromartie wants to pass the guard but Cotto is keeping the position.
Cotto avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Cotto is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Cromartie is controlling him.
Cromartie's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Cromartie prevents Cotto from getting back to his feet.
Cotto has a closed guard, preventing Cromartie from standing up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Cotto closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Cromartie is trying to stand up here but Cotto is controlling him well.

Cotto postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Cromartie to stand up.

A cross from Cromartie lands.
Cotto stuffs the takedown.
Cromartie wants to clinch

and Cotto counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Cotto prevents Cromartie from improving his position.
Cotto works his way into side control.
Cotto trying to control the position but Cromartie is working away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cromartie tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Cotto wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Cotto controls the position.
Cotto looks up at the clock and then as Cromartie takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Cotto smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Cotto tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Cotto has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Cromartie is looking for a sweep.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Cotto working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Cotto decides to stand back up.
A head kick misses from Cromartie.

Cotto clinches up with Cromartie and pushes him back against the cage.

Cotto breaks the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miguel Cotto dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Cotto tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cromartie sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cotto somewhat.

Cromartie gets the takedown into side control.
Cotto prevents Cromartie from moving into mount.
Cotto is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Cromartie's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Cromartie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cotto keeps working.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Cotto is not content to let Cromartie control the position.

Cotto is controlling Cromartie's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Cotto wants to get back to full guard.
Cromartie uses his free foot to push down on Cotto's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Cotto.
Cotto manages to control the position for a moment.
Cotto sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Cotto wants to control but Cromartie is keeping busy.
Cromartie tries to pass the half guard into mount. Cotto knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cotto wants to get back to full guard.
Cotto makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Cotto.
Cotto wants to sweep but no luck.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cotto controls Cromartie momentarily but Cromartie frees himself.

Cotto manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Cotto doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Cromartie counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Cotto is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Cromartie rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cotto moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Cotto throws a sloppy head kick and Cromartie moves out of range easily.

Cromartie has managed to clinch.
Cromartie wants to break free but Cotto has control.
Cromartie wants a takedown but no success here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Cotto tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Cromartie just stands there and leans against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Miguel Cotto. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Cotto wants a takedown.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Cotto fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Cromartie working hard to break the clinch.
Cromartie dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Cromartie is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Cromartie breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

and Cotto counters with a shoot takedown. Cromartie fights it but they end up in guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Cotto's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Cotto lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Cromartie fails with the takedown
and Cotto connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Cotto decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Cromartie wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Cotto has him pressed against the cage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Cotto pulls guard effortlessly.
Cotto looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cromartie is one step ahead there.
Cotto has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Cotto had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Cromartie defends it easily.

Cotto looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Cromartie passes into side control.
Cotto is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Cromartie cracks Cotto with a big right hand but Cotto just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Cromartie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cotto keeps working.
Cotto is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Cromartie asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Cotto can't do much from the bottom here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Cromartie tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Cotto prevents Cromartie from moving into mount.
Cotto is trying to control Cromartie's posture but Cromartie avoids it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Cotto counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Miguel Cotto has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Antonio Cromartie.

Cromartie wants to stand but Cotto is controlling the position.
Cotto trying to control the position from guard on top but Cromartie is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

And that's the end of the fight!
Miguel Cotto showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Cotto, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
