PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Denver Bull (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alexey Bykov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Denver Bull!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alexey Bykov!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Bull changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Bykov looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bykov can't do much from the bottom here.
Bull working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Bull working away.
Bull blocks the strikes from Bykov.

Bull is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Bykov has escaped the position, nice work there.
Bull fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Bull postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Bykov is trying to get back to half guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Bull shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Bykov defends it nicely.
Bull throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Nice takedown defense from Bykov. No joy for Bull on that attempt.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Denver Bull. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bykov stuffs the takedown attempt from Bull. Bull gets slowly back to his feet.

Bull is breathing heavily.
Bull shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bykov but Bykov pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Bykov closes the distance and pushes Bull back into the cage.
Bykov prevents a takedown attempt there.

Bykov turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Bykov manages to end up in side control.

Bull has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Bull shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Bykov as he jumps to the side.

Bykov shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Bull is trying to defend but Bykov finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Bull is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Bykov scores with a couple of nice shots.
Bykov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Bull keeps working.

Bull is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Bykov counters with a left to the body.
Bykov tries to clinch there but Bull circles away.

and Bykov makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Bykov wants to get up but he can't break Bull's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Bykov wants to control from the top but Bull keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bykov throwing strikes but missing.
Bull controls Bykov momentarily but Bykov frees himself.
Bykov wants to get up but he can't break Bull's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Bull wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Bykov connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Bull closes the distance but Bykov moves to the side

and Bykov counters with a shoot takedown. Bull fights it but they end up in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alexey Bykov dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Bykov thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Bull's head.
Alexey Bykov has got the better of the ground game so far.
Bykov takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Bull manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Bykov gets to his feet. Bull looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Bull thows a big elbow that misses.

Bykov is striking but Bull is not phased and passes to half guard.
Bull is trying to control. Bykov wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Bykov is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Bykov has a hand on Bull's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Bull takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Bykov is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Bull connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Bykov wants to hold on but Bull pushes him away.
Bull with shots to the head and body - Bykov looks very uncomfortable down there.

Bykov bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Bull has his feet on Bykov's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

and Bykov cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Bykov cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alexey Bykov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Bykov feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Bykov is trying to maintain the position but Bull is very close to passing his half guard.
Bykov throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Bull is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Bykov doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Bull.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Bykov lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Bykov shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Bull can't escape the position.

Bull is in all sorts of trouble here.

Bykov postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Bull looks a forlorn figure.

Bull tries to hold on but Bykov postures up.
Bull is wriggling around trying to escape.
Bull is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

Bykov looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
BOOM! Bykov connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Bykov thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Bull sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Bull has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Bykov is working away from the top position though.
Bykov not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Denver Bull has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Alexey Bykov is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Alexey Bykov comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Bykov has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
