PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ultimate Fighter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Greg Owens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fighter comes to the cage accompanied by Boom!. Greg Owens will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Glass and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fighter uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Owens.
Owens lands with an overhand left.
Owens throws a hook but Fighter blocks it.
Owens throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Owens's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Owens duly obliges.
Fighter checks a leg kick nicely.
Owens scores with a jab.

Fighter drives through with a takedown into guard.

Fighter is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Fighter drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Fighter jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Fighter had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Owens defends it easily.
Owens wanted to stand there but Fighter had control of the position.

Fighter has his foot on Owens's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Owens works his way back into a safe position though.

Owens must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Fighter is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Owens is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Owens has escaped and now he's on top!

Fighter looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Owens passes into half guard.
Fighter is breathing heavily.
Owens is pressing down on Fighter's thigh, looking to free his foot. Fighter is holding on for now.
Fighter works his way to full guard. Good work.

Fighter has an active guard here but Owens has managed to pass into half guard.

Fighter makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Fighter.

Fighter has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Owens can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Owens avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Owens working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Fighter is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Owens defends well.
Owens stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Fighter swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Fighter misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Owens is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Owens connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Fighter swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Fighter tries to score a power double leg takedown but Owens sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Fighter somewhat.

Owens is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ultimate Fighter. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Fighter throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Owens's waist but Owens gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Fighter off to one side.

Some bone on bone action there as Fighter checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Owens is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

Fighter shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Owens can do anything to dispel that myth.

Fighter moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Owens has worked his arm free - good work by Owens!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ultimate Fighter.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Fighter, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
