PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Akifumi Sato (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sam Burgess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sato comes to the cage accompanied by ''A Passage In Time'' by Authority Zero. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Akifumi Sato!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sam Burgess!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Yukihiro Shimada and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sato pushes Burgess up against the cage in a clinch.
Burgess tries to pull guard but Sato won't allow it.
Burgess is trying to break free.
Sato is trying to break the clinch but Burgess is controlling him.
Sato tries for a takedown but Burgess manages to get underhooks.

Sato tightens his grip and picks Burgess up, before dumping him to the ground. Burgess manages to land in guard.
Burgess managing to control the position.
Sato slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Sato stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Burgess swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Burgess has Sato pulled in close to control his posture.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Burgess tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Burgess is trying to keep Sato in close.
Sato stopping the sweep attempt from Burgess.
Sato showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sato in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Burgess looking to control but Sato passes into half guard.
Burgess is looking to control Sato's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Burgess avoid being mounted?
Burgess is trying to get back to full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sato tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Burgess swivels and escapes.
Sato circles away from the clinch attempt.

Burgess gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Burgess looking to hit a scissor sweep but Sato is one step ahead there.

Sato postures up.

Burgess kicks Sato off and gets to his feet.
Sato darts in trying to clinch

and Burgess counters by moving into the clinch.
Burgess tries to pull guard but Sato holds him up against the cage and eventually Burgess drops back down to his feet.
Burgess avoiding damage as Sato throws knees to the body.

Burgess decides to pull guard.
Sato stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Burgess swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Burgess is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Sato controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Sato stopping the sweep attempt from Burgess.

Burgess pushes Sato off and scrambles back to his feet.
Burgess looks gassed!

Sato closes the distance and pushes Burgess back into the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Akifumi Sato dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Sato doesn't succeed with the takedown
letting Burgess counter with a right hand.
Sato tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Sato shoots in and drives through. Burgess sprawls well.
The fight stays on the outside here - Burgess looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Sato shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Sato shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Burgess as he avoids it easily.
Sato keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sato fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Burgess sprawls well initially but Sato persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Burgess is trying to maintain the position but Sato is very close to passing his half guard.

Sato tries to pass the half guard into mount. Burgess knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sato tries to stand and escape but Burgess is controlling the position.
Burgess is looking to improve his position.

Sato is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Burgess wants to control but Sato is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sato not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Sato shoots and misses

and Burgess counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Burgess.

Burgess escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Burgess fails with an attempt to clinch.
Burgess tries to bum rush Sato with a series of wild strikes but Sato uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Burgess gets the takedown into side control.
Sato regains half guard.
Sato avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Burgess.

Sato moves into full guard.
Sato is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Sato is looking to stand up but Burgess isn't so interested in that idea.
Burgess wants to stand but Sato is controlling his posture from full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Burgess looking to pass the guard.

Sato has his foot on Burgess's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Burgess works his way back into a safe position though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Akifumi Sato will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Sato stays in close to Burgess's body and controls the position.

Still in half guard, Sato seems content to control.
Burgess takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Sato has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Burgess is looking to improve his position.
Sato content to control rather than advance.

The fighters are battling for position here. Burgess manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Akifumi Sato overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Akifumi Sato just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Sato throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Burgess's waist but Burgess gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sato off to one side.

Sato tries to clinch but Burgess is having none of it.
Sato throws a head kick that misses
and Burgess counters with a left to the body.
Sato shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Burgess sprawls well. Burgess wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Sato gets slowly back to his feet.

Burgess prevents a takedown attempt there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Akifumi Sato. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sato tries to clinch but Burgess is having none of it.

and Sato holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Sato has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Burgess regains guard immediately.
Sato passes into half guard.
Burgess wants to improve his position but Sato is controlling well.
Sato passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Burgess!
Burgess tries to control Sato's body but Sato pushes him off. Burgess squirms to his side and now Sato has his back!

And that's the end of the fight!
Akifumi Sato showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sato, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
