Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Jones! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Uchoa! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Alexandre Firmino and Seu Braga.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Uchoa misses with a jab, cross combination.
Jones shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Jones was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Uchoa regains half guard. Jones trying to control from half guard but Uchoa is working away. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Jones is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Jones is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Uchoa is looking to improve his position.
Uchoa makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Uchoa.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones stopping the sweep attempt from Uchoa. Uchoa is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Uchoa working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jones doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jones manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Uchoa is striking off his back. Jones thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard. Uchoa on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Jones looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Jones in particular looking to stall. Jones drops an elbow to the side of Uchoa's head. Uchoa tries to roll over but Jones keeps him under control. Uchoa is refusing to be controlled, as Jones sits in half guard. Uchoa wants to get back to full guard. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jones connects with a nice short shot to Uchoa's temple. Uchoa is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Uchoa is staying active underneath Jones, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Jones is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Uchoa sees it coming and defends easily. Jones is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Uchoa has hold of Jones's hands but Jones slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Uchoa works his way to full guard. Good work. Jones wants to pass the guard but Uchoa is keeping the position. Jones distracts Uchoa with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Jones is breathing heavily. Uchoa keeping full guard, as Jones tries to pass. Jones wants to control from the top but Uchoa keeps moving. Jones pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Uchoa is keeping the position for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Jones throws and elbow that misses. Uchoa uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jones's guard. Nice move by Uchoa! Jones looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Uchoa content to stall in guard here. Jones has momentary wrist control but Uchoa slips an elbow through the middle. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Paul Jones dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Jones closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Jones lands a nice forearm strike. Uchoa is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Sloppy strikes there by Jones. Uchoa regains half guard. Uchoa is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Jones takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Uchoa pushes Jones off looking to stand but Jones dives back in and keeps control.
Uchoa makes his way to full guard, as Jones worked for a kimura.

That's one minute gone in the round. Uchoa looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Uchoa is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Jones defends well. Jones forces his way into half guard. Ground and pound from Jones. Jones has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Jones winds up and cracks Uchoa with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Jones looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Uchoa with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Jones is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Uchoa has managed to free his arm - good work. Jones wants to work for an arm triangle but Uchoa is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Jones is keen to just control but Uchoa is a slippery customer. Jones is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Uchoa is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Jones throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Jones is looking for a kimura here.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Jones misses with a hook. Uchoa ducked under it nicely. Uchoa looks to land a combination. Jones sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. Jones slips a straight right by Uchoa. Jones shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Uchoa manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Uchoa looking for a guillotine here but Jones defends easily.
Jones with a flurry of punches that miss.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jones sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Uchoa's guard. Jones prevents Uchoa from improving his position. Paul Jones overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Uchoa is staying active underneath Jones, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Uchoa is pressing down on Jones's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jones passes easily into side control. Nice work. Jones cracks Uchoa with a big right hand but Uchoa just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jones wants to lay and pray for a moment but Uchoa keeps working. Jones looks up at the clock and then as Uchoa takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Jones smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Jones takes a little break here. Uchoa wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Jones tries for a kimura but Uchoa is defending well. Uchoa is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Ground and pound from Jones.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Jones seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Uchoa does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Paul Jones is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Jones missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Jones trying to control from half guard but Uchoa is working away. Rafael Uchoa has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Uchoa throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Uchoa clinches up with Jones and pushes him back against the cage. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Uchoa working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely. Uchoa gets underhooks to prevent Jones's takedown attempt.
Uchoa escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

And that's the end of the fight! Paul Jones showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Jones, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
