PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sanctus Azrael (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Khalil Malla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Malla has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. The key to victory for Sanctus Azrael has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sanctus Azrael!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Khalil Malla!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Donatello Bradman and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Azrael pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Malla defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Azrael.
Azrael shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Azrael shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Malla defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sanctus Azrael. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Malla stuffs the takedown.
Azrael throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Azrael tries for a takedown but Malla sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Azrael shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Malla defending well as Azrael loads up on a big left hand.
Malla leaves Azrael with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Azrael is breathing heavily.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Azrael. Malla shrugs it off though.

Malla shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Azrael napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Azrael could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Azrael is looking for a sweep.
You can see the frustration on Azrael's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Malla is trying to get an arm triangle but Azrael is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Azrael is looking to get back to his feet here but Malla is keeping cool and he's managed to take Azrael's back.
Azrael is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Malla.

Azrael can't escape the position.

Malla avoiding Azrael 's attempts to control his hands.
Azrael is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Malla is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Malla is trying to stick to Azrael's back but Azrael is turning into Malla. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Malla's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Azrael.
Malla seems keen to control Azrael's posture.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Azrael closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Malla did well to prevent Azrael getting side control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Azrael is trying to control the action in half guard but Malla is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Khalil Malla will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Azrael gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Malla counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Azrael is looking for a sweep. Malla is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Azrael works his way to full guard. Good work.
Azrael looking to hit a scissor sweep but Malla is one step ahead there.
Azrael is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Azrael looking to control but Malla passes into half guard.
Azrael wants to control but Malla is keeping busy.
Azrael pushes Malla off but Malla dives into side control.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Azrael can't do much from the bottom here.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Malla takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Azrael is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Azrael is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Azrael manages to regain half guard. Good work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Azrael tries to get to full guard but Malla has control of the leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Khalil Malla showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fight stays on the outside here - Azrael looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Azrael pushes Malla off and gets back to his feet.

Malla is looking to work his way around to Azrael's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.

Azrael is desperately trying to improve his position but Malla has a good base and remains in mount.
Malla looking to ground and pound but Azrael is blocking nicely.
Azrael wants to control but Malla is having none of it.
Azrael is trying desperately to improve position.
Azrael is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Khalil Malla has got the better of the ground game so far.

Khalil Malla comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Malla has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
