Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Doug Lacey! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gerald Wilson! The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, John Roberts and David Schapiro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lacey takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Wilson throws a leg kick which misses Lacey's front leg but catches the back leg as Lacey tries to avoid it. Lacey looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Wilson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Lacey manages to get himself to full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Lacey tries to land a sweep but no joy. Lacey is working hard here to advance position. Wilson wanted to stand there but Lacey had control of the position. Wilson postures up.
Lacey is looking to sweep but instead, Wilson has passed into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Wilson wants to get back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Lacey fails with a takedown attempt. No luck with that takedown attempt from Lacey. Lacey looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Wilson! Lacey is breathing heavily. Wilson tries to get back to half guard but can't. Wilson controls the position. Wilson blocking the ground and pound. Wilson manages to regain half guard whilst avoiding the strikes. Wilson desperately trying to maintain half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lacey thows a huge punch but Wilson dodges it nicely.
Wilson is pressing down on Lacey's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Lacey scoring with punches to the head and body. Wilson working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Lacey. Lacey is looking to work some ground and pound but Wilson has wrist control. Lacey won't allow Wilson to sweep him here. Lacey missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Lacey accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Lacey in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Lacey throws a strike but Wilson rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Lacey trying to keep a closed guard but Wilson is proving a slippery customer.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Lacey closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Wilson did well to prevent Lacey getting side control. Lacey with the ground and pound but Wilson uses the opportunity to regain guard. Wilson working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Lacey. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Lacey throws a big right hand that misses. Lacey missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Lacey is looking to work some ground and pound but Wilson has wrist control. Wilson wants to sweep but no luck. Wilson working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Lacey. Lacey is fighting to break Wilson's control of his arms but Wilson is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Wilson misses with a hook. Lacey ducked under it nicely. Lacey takes one on the button. Lacey shoots in but Wilson avoids the takedown attempt easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Doug Lacey. That's going to take a lot out of him. Wilson lands a slapping body shot.
Wilson stalks Lacey and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Lacey's face. Lacey staggers backwards, shaken.
It looks like Doug Lacey has been cut. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Lacey takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Lacey slips a straight right by Wilson. Lacey fails with a takedown attempt. Lacey ducks under a wild hook from Wilson. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Lacey gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Wilson scores with a jab to the body. Lacey takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming. Lacey walks straight into a right hand from Wilson - that's dropped him! Wilson jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Lacey from any more punishment! Lacey complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Gerald Wilson!
