PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Patrick Mabilog (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kazushi Sakuraba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Patrick Mabilog!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kazushi Sakuraba!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Ren Mimura and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sakuraba pushes Mabilog up against the cage in a clinch.
Mabilog looking to slow down the pace here.

Mabilog is fighting off a takedown attempt but Sakuraba is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Mabilog to the mat. Mabilog regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Mabilog wants to sweep here but Sakuraba controlling him for the moment.

Mabilog working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sakuraba doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sakuraba manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Sakuraba stands up from Mabilog's guard - Sakuraba perhaps looking for a knockout.

Sakuraba closes the distance and pushes Mabilog back into the cage.

Mabilog is trying to maintain the position but Sakuraba is very close to passing his half guard.

Sakuraba is looking to pass Mabilog's guard but actually Mabilog recovers to full guard.

Mabilog is working an open guard so Sakuraba takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Sakuraba closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Mabilog did well to prevent Sakuraba getting side control.

Sakuraba seems to be working for a kimura but Mabilog defends the submission attempt.
Sakuraba wants to pass to mount but Mabilog is defending the position.

Mabilog trying to hold on to Sakuraba's head to control him but Sakuraba postures up.
Mabilog is refusing to be controlled, as Sakuraba sits in half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sakuraba is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Sakuraba throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mabilog is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Sakuraba pulls his head out easily.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Sakuraba fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mabilog sprawls well initially but Sakuraba persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Mabilog is breathing heavily.
Mabilog is trying to escape back to his feet but Sakuraba uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Sakuraba decides to stand back up.
Mabilog throws a head kick that misses.

Sakuraba scores with a takedown into Mabilog's guard.

Mabilog is working an open guard so Sakuraba takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Sakuraba moves into the clinch.
Sakuraba crunches a lovely knee into Mabilog's ribcage.

Sakuraba breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Sakuraba closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Sakuraba lands in his opponent's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Mabilog wants to sweep here but Sakuraba controlling him for the moment.
Sakuraba is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kazushi Sakuraba dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Sakuraba scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Sakuraba decides to stand up.
Mabilog doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Sakuraba moves into the clinch.

Sakuraba wants the takedown. Mabilog is fighting it off but Sakuraba persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mabilog's guard against the cage.
Sakuraba stands and throws Mabilog's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Kazushi Sakuraba has got the better of the ground game so far.

Mabilog is trying to control Sakuraba's posture but Sakuraba avoids it.
Mabilog is looking for a sweep.
Mabilog parries the strikes from Sakuraba easily there. Sakuraba is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Mabilog to escape.

Sakuraba has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Mabilog gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Sakuraba to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Sakuraba looking to pass the guard.
Sakuraba not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sakuraba's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Sakuraba landing with the ground and pound.
Mabilog is looking to stand up but Sakuraba isn't so interested in that idea.

Sakuraba stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Mabilog misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Sakuraba.

Sakuraba scores a takedown into full mount!
Sakuraba tries to control but Mabilog wriggling away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Sakuraba working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Mabilog tries to hold on but Sakuraba pushes him away.
Sakuraba mounts Mabilog! Really nice guard pass there!
Sakuraba tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kazushi Sakuraba showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Sakuraba throws a series of strikes that have Mabilog backpedaling.

and Sakuraba counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Mabilog!

Sakuraba wants to finish this one by submission but Mabilog is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Sakuraba.

Mabilog wants to control but Sakuraba is having none of it.
Sakuraba is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Mabilog can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Mabilog is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sakuraba sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Mabilog is desperately trying to improve his position but Sakuraba has a good base and remains in mount.
Sakuraba looking to control and managing it successfully.
Mabilog is trying to reverse the position but instead Sakuraba has taken his back - oops!

Good control from Sakuraba.
Sakuraba lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Mabilog hold on?!

Mabilog looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
Sakuraba controls the position.

Sakuraba wants to control but Mabilog is keeping busy.
Sakuraba missing with strikes.
Mabilog can't escape the position.
Sakuraba controlling from the back.
Mabilog rolls, trying to escape but Sakuraba keeps control of the position.
Sakuraba lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kazushi Sakuraba comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sakuraba has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
