Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ville Apila! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mini Bard! The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Radbod Blank and Daniel Blasius.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Apila feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Bard wants to get back to his feet but Apila is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Apila wants to control from the top but Bard keeps moving. Bard keeping full guard, as Apila tries to pass. Bard has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Apila can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Apila wants to control from the top but Bard keeps moving. Apila sitting in guard here, content to control.
That's one minute gone in the round. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Bard keeping moving, preventing Apila from controlling successfully.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Apila blocks a head kick by Bard.
Bard throws a chopping leg kick but Apila manages to avoid taking any serious damage. Apila dodges the punch combination from Bard.
Bard swings for the body but Apila moves out of range.
Bard misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Apila.
The fighters circling - Bard throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Bard throws a head kick that misses. Bard drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Bard connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. Bard throws a head kick that misses. Bard looks gassed! Bard misses the shot to the body.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Bard fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Apila checks it well. Apila scores a takedown into full mount! Apila is landing with some decent strikes but Bard is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Apila controlling the position easily from mount. Bard is controlling an arm, preventing Apila from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
Bard is looking to improve his position but Apila isn't that keen on the idea. Bard in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Apila is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Bard is surviving well by controlling Apila's body position as best he can. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Apila controlling the pace for now. Apila is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Bard to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Bard shrugs it off. Apila is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Bard can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Bard is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Apila is working for a guillotine from mount but Bard frees his head quite easily.
Apila goes for an armbar but Bard turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Bard. Apila can't keep his opponent in guard - Bard advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Bard wants to stand but Apila has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ville Apila dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Bard jabbing away but nothing is landing. Thud! ouch! good body kick from Bard - that will leave a mark!
Bard throws a head kick that misses. Bard misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Apila.
Bard throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Apila scores with a takedown into Bard's guard. Bard working for a triangle but Apila defends it easily.
Apila stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Bard swivels though and keeps the full guard. Bard is breathing heavily. Bard is working an open guard so Apila takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Ville Apila is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
That's one minute gone in the round. Apila shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Apila trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Apila slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Apila forces his way into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Apila performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bard is looking to escape. Apila is looking for a kimura here.
Apila stalling. Bard wants to improve his position but Apila is controlling well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Apila in particular looking to stall. Bard works his way to full guard. Good work. Apila has gone for a leg lock! Bard slips out almost immediately though and dives into Apila's guard. Bard has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Apila is proving hard to escape from. Apila is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Bard trying to stand up but can't free himself from Apila's guard. Apila keeping full guard, as Bard tries to pass. Apila looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Apila is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Bard is fighting to break Apila's control of his arms but Apila is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ville Apila dominated that second round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
Bard will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Apila decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Apila is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Apila wants to take a breather but Bard is having none of it. Bard is looking to escape. Bard is staying active underneath Apila, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Bard takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Apila is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Bard sees it coming and defends easily. Apila trying to control the pace.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Ville Apila just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. A combination from Bard does no damage. Bard misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Bard pivots, looking for a leg kick but Apila is out of range and Bard settles back down. Bard thows a body shot but no joy. Bard throws a sloppy head kick and Apila moves out of range easily. Bard is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Apila rather than just go for the knockout. Bard throws a right and a left that Apila avoids nicely. Apila drives through and clinches with Bard against the cage.
Apila tries to pull guard but Bard holds him up against the cage and eventually Apila drops back down to his feet.
Apila tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Bard just stands there and leans against the cage. Apila fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ville Apila. That's going to take a lot out of him. Apila tries to pull guard but Bard won't allow it.

Apila has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Bard avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Apila digs a right hand into Bard's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Bard's gas tank. Ville Apila is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Bard has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate. Apila jumps guard.
Apila trying to control the position here. Ville Apila overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Bard wants to stand but Apila is controlling his posture from full guard. Bard being controlled here momentarily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Apila working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Bard doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Apila is tightening it up a little... Bard has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Bard reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Bard taps out! nice BJJ there by Apila!
