PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kalam Mekhar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Takanori Gomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Mekhar might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to 80 Kidz - Alt A. Kalam Mekhar looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kalam Mekhar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Takanori Gomi!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Yuuki Gou and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomi keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Mekhar misses with a straight left.

Gomi moves into range and clinches up with Mekhar.
Mekhar is working for takedown but Gomi is calmly controlling the position for now.
Gomi lands with a short shot to the head.

Gomi wants the takedown. Mekhar is fighting it off but Gomi persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mekhar's guard against the cage.
Mekhar controls Gomi momentarily but Gomi frees himself.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gomi accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Gomi wants to pass the guard but Mekhar is keeping the position.

Mekhar looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Gomi not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Gomi wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mekhar keeps working.

Mekhar tries to roll over but Gomi keeps him under control.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Gomi throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Mekhar was covering up waiting for the punch and Gomi finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Despite being in the dominant position, Takanori Gomi just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Gomi darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Mekhar throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Gomi stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Mekhar ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Gomi moves away.

Mekhar throws a jab when Gomi was well out of range.
Gomi takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

and Gomi cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gomi throws a good cross that connects.
Gomi dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Gomi pushes Mekhar up against the cage in a clinch.

Gomi is looking for a kimura but Mekhar is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gomi to get the leverage.

Mekhar is working to avoid the ground and pound but Gomi connects with a decent elbow.
Gomi tries to move to mount but Mekhar blocks the move with his legs.

Gomi misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Gomi looks up at the clock and then as Mekhar takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Gomi smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Mekhar takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Mekhar tries to buck Gomi off but Gomi is having none of it.

Takanori Gomi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Gomi, as that shot connected.
Gomi avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Mekhar is bucking up trying to escape but Gomi cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Gomi has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Mekhar's face.

Gomi is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Mekhar is surviving well by controlling Gomi's body position as best he can.

Takanori Gomi is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Gomi takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Gomi cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Gomi is landing with some decent strikes but Mekhar is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Takanori Gomi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gomi has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
