The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Koskela has Matsyuchenko up against the cage in a clinch.
Koskela stalling in the clinch but Matsyuchenko improves position. Matsyuchenko tries to land a knee to the head but Koskela blocks with his arms.
Matsyuchenko with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Matsyuchenko swings wildly with an uppercut but Koskela uses good head movement to avoid it. Matsyuchenko works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Koskela blocks an elbow strike from Matsyuchenko.
Matsyuchenko looking for a takedown. Matsyuchenko connects with a nasty looking knee right to Koskela's face.
Koskela pulls Matsyuchenko into guard.
Matsyuchenko postures up in Koskela's guard and throws a big left but Koskela blocks it. Matsyuchenko stopping the sweep attempt from Koskela. Matsyuchenko has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Koskela is proving hard to escape from. Koskela preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Koskela holds on and takes a little breather. Matsyuchenko slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matsyuchenko is looking to work some ground and pound but Koskela has wrist control. Koskela working a defensive guard here.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Koskela. Koskela wants to land a leg kick but Matsyuchenko is out of range. Matsyuchenko lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Koskela looks gassed! Matsyuchenko has his takedown stuffed and Koskela counters with a takedown into side control. Matsyuchenko could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Matsyuchenko is letting Koskela control him for a moment. Matsyuchenko is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Koskela wants to control but Matsyuchenko is keeping him busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Koskela lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Matsyuchenko is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Matsyuchenko is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Koskela trying to pass the guard but Matsyuchenko defending well. Matsyuchenko is trying to stand.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Koskela decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage! Matsyuchenko is trying to maintain the position but Koskela is very close to passing his half guard. Matsyuchenko works his way to full guard. Good work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Matsyuchenko is on top in guard.
Koskela working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Matsyuchenko. Matsyuchenko trying to control but Koskela is working from the bottom. Koskela is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Matsyuchenko trying to control the position from guard on top but Koskela is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Koskela tries to land a sweep but no joy. Koskela is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Matsyuchenko wants to improve his position but Koskela is controlling well.
Koskela has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Koskela controlling his opponent. Koskela wants to control the pace but Matsyuchenko is squirming around nicely. Matsyuchenko in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. Koskela with shots to the head and body - Matsyuchenko looks very uncomfortable down there. Matsyuchenko is trying to reverse the position but instead Koskela has taken his back - oops! Koskela scores with strikes from the back.
Matsyuchenko is rocked! Matsyuchenko won't enjoy being in this position. Koskela looking for the choke. Oh... he's slipped the arm under the neck - Matsyuchenko is tapping - it's over boys! Koskela picks up the submission victory!
