Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jesus Cavalera! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sean Benoit! The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Stewart Dunkirk and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Benoit misses with a looping left. A looping hook to the body misses from Benoit. Cavalera does a little dance to reset his feet. Benoit takes a swing at Cavalera's ribcage but misses. A looping hook to the body misses from Benoit. Cavalera does a little dance to reset his feet. Benoit displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. A head kick lands from Cavalera that sends Benoit to the canvas. Benoit tries to scramble back to his feet but Cavalera brings him back down into side control.
Benoit is rocked!
It looks like Sean Benoit has been cut. Cavalera tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Cavalera has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Benoit is still in real trouble! Can Cavalera finish him? We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Cavalera working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Cavalera tries for a kimura but Benoit is defending well. Benoit seems to have recovered his senses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Benoit is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Cavalera asserts his dominance and retains side control. Cavalera thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Cavalera is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Benoit looks calm but he's in trouble here. Cavalera gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Benoit is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Cavalera lets go of the hold and Benoit can pop his arm back in it's socket.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:32 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jesus Cavalera! Jesus Cavalera retains his welterweight title!
