PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Brian Fantana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Urijah Cote (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Brian Fantana!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Urijah Cote!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Eliza Hachem and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cote is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Fantana.
Fantana blocks a jab.
Cote wants to clinch up but Fantana keeps it at a distance.
Fantana swats away the attempt to clinch by Cote.
Cote is looking to clinch but Fantana is avoiding it.
Fantana misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Cote throws a leg kick but Fantana moved away.
Cote leaves Fantana with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Cote tries to close the distance and clinch up but Fantana swats him away and circles back towards the center.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Fantana decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Cote wants to get back to his feet.
Cote is trying to get back to full guard.

Cote won't allow Fantana to pass to mount.
Fantana is keen to just control but Cote is a slippery customer.
Cote is trying to stand.
Fantana takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The fighters are battling for position here. Cote manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Fantana drops back, looking for a kneebar! Cote looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Cote looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Cote!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Cote decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Fantana slips under a jab.

Cote missing with a left hand there. Fantana was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Fantana fails to land the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brian Fantana. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Fantana shoots in but Cote avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Urijah Cote seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Fantana is breathing heavily.

Cote swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Fantana avoids the head kick by Cote.
Cote getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Cote misses with a takedown attempt

and Fantana moves into the clinch.

Cote wants to control from the top but Fantana keeps moving.
Fantana preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Cote slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Fantana wriggles free and stands up.
Cote fails with an attempt to clinch.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Cote is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Cote keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Fantana swats away the attempt to clinch by Cote.

Cote drives through with a takedown into guard.
Cote wants to control from the top but Fantana keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Urijah Cote dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Brian Fantana is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Fantana gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Cote counters with a one-two to the body.
Cote misses with a leg kick.

and Cote counters with a nice double leg into side control. Fantana won't be happy with that.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Fantana tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Cote wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Cote cracks Fantana with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Cote takes a little break here. Fantana wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Cote connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Fantana some visible discomfort.
Fantana tries to bench press Cote off him but Cote keeps the position.

Cote content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Cote thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Cote is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Cote is working Fantana over with some ground and pound from side control.
Cote wants to lay and pray for a moment but Fantana keeps working.

Cote stands up and beckons Fantana to his feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Cote just misses with a punch to the body.

Cote swinging wildly here.

Cote will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Fantana slips a jab from Cote.
Fantana on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Cote misses with a body shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Urijah Cote showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Fantana shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Cote is not content to let Fantana control the position.
Cote is trying to get back to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cote is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Fantana stalling away here and it's allowed Cote to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Cote is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Fantana looking to sit in guard and control but Cote gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Cote trying to control the position from guard on top but Fantana is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Cote advances position into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cote in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Cote trying to control the position but Fantana is working away.
Fantana is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Cote asserts his dominance and retains side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Cote has hold of Fantana's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Fantana seems comfortable defending it but Cote has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Fantana is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Fantana is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Cote couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:12 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Urijah Cote!
