The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Meyer closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Pekkanen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Meyer is working away from the top position though. Meyer looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Pekkanen is looking to control Meyer's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Pekkanen avoid being mounted? Pekkanen is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Meyer is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Pekkanen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Meyer on the ground. Meyer sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Pekkanen defending well though. Pekkanen is looking to escape. Meyer trying to mount his opponent but Pekkanen defends it.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Pekkanen closes this distance looking for a takedown but Meyer circles away. Meyer should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Meyer is rocked! Meyer takes the fight into the clinch. Pekkanen tries to pull guard but Meyer won't allow it.

Pekkanen tries for a takedown but Meyer sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Pekkanen closes the distance but Meyer moves to the side so Meyer counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Pekkanen tries to land a sweep but no joy. Meyer looking to pass the guard. Meyer won't allow Pekkanen to sweep him here.

Meyer is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Meyer wants to control from the top but Pekkanen keeps moving. Pekkanen keeping full guard, as Meyer tries to pass. Pekkanen looking for a sweep. Not yet Pekkanen, not yet.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Pekkanen shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Meyer tries to clinch there but Pekkanen circles away.

Meyer would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Meyer wants to control from the top but Pekkanen keeps moving. Meyer controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Meyer stopping the sweep attempt from Pekkanen. Pekkanen throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Pekkanen is pulling down on Meyer's head to control his posture. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Meyer stuffs the takedown attempt from Pekkanen. Pekkanen gets slowly back to his feet. Pekkanen connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Pekkanen tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Meyer counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Pekkanen lands a nice uppercut. Knees to the body from Meyer.
Pekkanen is looking for a takedown up against the ropes. Meyer gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Pekkanen gets underhooks to prevent Meyer's takedown attempt.
Pekkanen keeps control of Meyer as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Pekkanen wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Pekkanen stalling in the clinch but Meyer improves position. Meyer decides to pull guard. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Meyer has his foot on Pekkanen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pekkanen works his way back into a safe position though. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Meyer working a defensive guard here.
Meyer pulls Pekkanen in close to his closed guard and prevents Pekkanen from doing any damage or advancing position.

We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Meyer is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Pekkanen working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Meyer tries to land a sweep but no joy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Meyer is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Meyer keeping moving, preventing Pekkanen from controlling successfully. Pekkanen is looking to stand up but Meyer won't let him.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Meyer moves into the clinch. Pekkanen prevents Meyer from breaking the clinch. Pekkanen tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Meyer smiles and moves away.

Pekkanen shoots in looking for a takedown. Meyer tries to sprawl out of it but Pekkanen keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. Meyer manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Pekkanen has a takedown stuffed. Pekkanen tries to clinch but fails miserably and Meyer counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Pekkanen trying to stall but Meyer improves his position.

Didier Meyer showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!
