Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gerard Smurf (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and PJ Benn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Gerard Smurf!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, PJ Benn!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Hirohito Nitta and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smurf bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Benn tries to bench press Smurf off him but Smurf keeps the position.

Smurf tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smurf has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smurf misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Benn manages to work his way to half guard, despite Smurf's best efforts.
Benn is looking to escape.
Benn has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Smurf is working away from the top position though.

Smurf is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smurf sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Benn defending well though.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Benn gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Benn is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Smurf is controlling him.
Smurf is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Benn wants to sweep but no luck.
Smurf prevents Benn from getting back to his feet.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Benn is on top in guard.
Smurf is breathing heavily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Benn postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Benn wants to pass the guard but Smurf is keeping the position.
Smurf trying to control the position.
Benn trying to control the position from guard on top but Smurf is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Benn trying to stand up but can't free himself from Smurf's guard.
Smurf wants to stand up but Benn is controlling him.
Smurf manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Benn manages to get himself to full guard.
Smurf might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Smurf is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Benn is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Benn pushes Smurf off and scrambles back to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smurf leaves Benn with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Smurf looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gerard Smurf dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Benn tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Smurf swivels and escapes.
Benn throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Smurf's head.

and Benn counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
A left hand lands to the body for Smurf.

Smurf pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Benn has closed the distance and engaged Smurf in a clinch.
Benn lands a knee to the head.

Smurf has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Benn uses from the top position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Benn accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Benn trying to control but Smurf is working from the bottom.

Benn drops back looking for a leg! Smurf is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smurf manages to kick Benn off! Benn jumps back into Smurf's guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Benn tries for a takedown but Smurf circles away easily

and Smurf counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Smurf throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Benn is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Smurf keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Benn is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Smurf holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Benn throws a strike but Smurf avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Smurf not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Benn distracts Smurf with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Smurf trying to control the position.
Smurf utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Smurf lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Benn!

Smurf working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Benn turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Smurf off and cradles Benn's limp body as Smurf celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:02 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Gerard Smurf!
