Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Eric Richards! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Robert Smith! The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Alexandre Firmino and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Richards wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance. Richards tries to clinch there but Smith circles away.
Richards throws a half hearted mid kick. Richards scoring well with a low kick there.
Richards doesn't manage to clinch there - Smith circles away.
Richards wants to clinch. Richards tries to clinch up but Smith circles away and keeps his distance. Smith looks for a takedown but Richards sprawls well. Smith swats away the attempt to clinch by Richards. Smith shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. Smith wants to control the pace but Richards is squirming around nicely. Richards is trying to stand. Smith looking to secure an arm triangle but Richards defends it well. Smith looks gassed! Smith avoids the attempt from Richards to control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith controlling his opponent. Poor strikes thrown by Smith there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Smith can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Richards is looking to escape. Richards knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smith on the ground. Smith avoids the attempt from Richards to control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. You get the feeling that Richards really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Smith trying to control but he's not successful this time. Smith avoids the attempt from Richards to control. Smith moves to his opponent's back but Richards bucks him off and ends up in guard. A bit of a disaster there for Smith. Richards wants to stand but Smith has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Smith keeps the fight on the outside.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Richards moves in looking to clinch but Smith pushes him off. Richards throws a right and a left that Smith avoids nicely. Smith fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Richards sprawls well initially but Smith persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Smith thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Richards's head. Richards is defending against the submission attempts here by Smith.
Smith is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Richards is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
