The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Assis throws a body punch but Aerts moves out of range.
Assis is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Aerts.
Aerts slips under a jab.
Aerts defending well as Assis loads up on a big left hand.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Assis checks a leg kick.
Assis looks to throw the jab but Aerts is out of range.
Assis loads up on a big right hand but Aerts slips the punch.
Assis checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Nice body punch from Aerts.
Aerts lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.

Aerts shoots in for a double leg but Assis sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Assis throws a lazy right hand but Aerts sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

and Aerts counters with a body kick that stops Assis in his tracks momentarily.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

Aerts looks to land a body kick but Assis moved away.

Assis tries a head kick but it misses.
Assis looks to throw the jab but Aerts is out of range.

Assis connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Aerts misses with the combination.
Aerts throws out a loose jab but Assis uses good head movement to avoid it.
Assis will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Assis closes the distance and clinches up with Aerts, looking for a takedown. Assis pushes Aerts against the cage but Aerts circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Aerts pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Aerts throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Aerts ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Assis stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Assis wants it to stay on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Andy Aerts. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Aerts scores with a sloppy right hand. Assis should have avoided that one.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Assis holds on and takes a little breather.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Aerts postures up and lands a big shot to Assis's brow.
Aerts loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Assis moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Aerts has worked his arm free - good work by Aerts!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

It looks like Andy Aerts has been cut.

Assis throws an overhand right that lands on Aerts's shoulder, as Aerts tries to avoid the shot.
Aerts throws a series of punches but Assis avoids them all with ease.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Assis lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Aerts circles away quickly and effectively.

Assis throws a shot from downtown. Aerts moves away and avoids it.

Andy Aerts is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Aerts shoots in for a takedown but Assis shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Aerts throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Assis goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Assis feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Aerts sprawling to the canvas! Aerts rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Assis finish him?!
