PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mike Wiet (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paulo Reis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wiet comes to the cage accompanied by Mia - Paper Planes. The crowd seem to be enjoying Reis's choice of entrance music: Superbeast - Rob Zombie. Paulo Reis acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Mike Wiet!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Paulo Reis!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Ackerman and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wiet tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Reis shoots for a double leg takedown but Wiet sprawls well. He's pushed Reis's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Reis gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Wiet tries a knee to the head but Reis blocks it.
Reis has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Wiet avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Wiet pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Reis shoots in for a double leg but Wiet sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Mike Wiet has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paulo Reis.

Reis shoots in looking for a takedown. Wiet tries to sprawl out of it but Reis keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wiet manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Reis is trying to drag Wiet to the mat but Wiet just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Reis turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Reis manages to end up in side control.

Reis throwing strikes but Wiet manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Wiet is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Wiet tries to buck Reis off but he can't manage it.
Reis can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Wiet is looking to escape.
Wiet's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Reis wants to control the pace but Wiet is squirming around nicely.
Reis throws some wild stikes that Wiet manages to avoid easily.
Wiet wants to try and get back to his feet.

Reis goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Wiet is on top in guard.
Wiet wants to stand but Reis is controlling his posture from full guard.
Reis wants to improve his position but instead Wiet has moved into half guard.

Wiet seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Reis closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Wiet to the mat! Wiet manages to get full guard.
Reis wants to control from the top but Wiet keeps moving.
Reis throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Wiet works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Reis looking to sit in guard and control but Wiet gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Reis wants to hit a switch here but Wiet passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Reis there!
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Wiet here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Reis can't escape the position.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mike Wiet will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


A head kick from Wiet lands but Reis takes it in his stride.
Reis circles away from the clinch attempt

and Reis counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Reis seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Wiet does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Wiet pushes Reis off looking to stand but Reis dives back in and keeps control.
Reis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Wiet keeps working.
Reis is stalling here. Wiet is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Reis seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Wiet has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Wiet decides to stand back up. Wiet steps back and let's Reis get back to his feet.
Reis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Reis drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wiet wants to stand up but Reis is controlling him.

Wiet wriggles free and stands up.
Wiet tries to close the distance and clinch but Reis swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Reis has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Wiet is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Reis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Wiet swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mike Wiet.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Wiet, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
