PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Julian Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Uriel Black (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Steel comes into the arena with Lay Low - Snoop Dogg blaring out of the sound system. Uriel Black will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Julian Steel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Uriel Black!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Frank Dennis and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Black throws a body punch but Steel moves out of range.
Steel blocks the body kick.

Steel shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Steel in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Black is trying to keep Steel in close.
Steel looking to pass the guard.
Steel missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Black trying to keep a closed guard but Steel is proving a slippery customer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Black is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Steel thows a big elbow that misses.

Steel trying to control the position from guard on top but Black is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Steel blocks a jab.
A telegraphed right hand from Black misses the target.
Black thows a body shot but no joy.
Black throws a lazy right hand but Steel sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Steel misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Steel shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Black sprawls well. Black wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Steel gets slowly back to his feet.
Steel fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Julian Steel. That's going to take a lot out of him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Steel shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Black as he avoids it easily.
Steel fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Black throws a looping overhand right but Steel ducks down to avoid it.
Black lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Steel circles away quickly and effectively.
Steel shoots in but no luck this time.
Steel avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Black keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Black throws a right and a left that Steel avoids nicely.
Steel blocks a jab.
Steel takes a jab right on the kisser.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Black scores with a one two! Steel had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Black looks to land a combination but Steel avoids it well.
Steel shoots in and drives through. Black sprawls well.
Steel keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Steel shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Black as he avoids it easily.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Steel is defended easily by Black.

Steel shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Steel showed some decent athleticism there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Black has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Steel is working away from the top position though.

Black is looking to improve his position.
Steel working over Black with some ground and pound. Black looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Black regains full guard. Nicely done.
Steel passes into half guard.
Black wants to improve his position but Steel is controlling well.
Steel not landing any meaningful shots this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Uriel Black will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Black throws an overhand right that lands on Steel's shoulder, as Steel tries to avoid the shot.
A combination from Black does no damage.
Steel shoots in and drives through. Black sprawls well.
Steel shoots in for a takedown but Black shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Black throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Steel fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Black throws a hook but Steel blocks it.
Steel blocks a jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Black misses with a straight left.
Black defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Steel.
The fighters circling - Black throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Black goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

A punch lands to the side of Steel 's head but he takes it in his stride.

Steel changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Black looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Black is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Steel thows a huge punch but Black dodges it nicely.
Black wants to get back to full guard.

Black looking for submissions off his back.
Steel throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Steel connects with a nice short shot to Black's temple.
Steel is keen to just control but Black is a slippery customer.
Steel thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Black's head.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Black is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Black gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Steel is working Black over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Black controls Steel momentarily but Steel frees himself.
Steel postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Steelis looking to pass into half guard but Black pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Black is in guard.
Black postures up in Steel's guard and throws a big left but Steel blocks it.
Steel keeping moving, preventing Black from controlling successfully.

Black postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Steel is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Black, into his guard.
Steel thows a big elbow that misses.
Steel wants to control from the top but Black keeps moving.
Black looking to control.
Black keeping moving, preventing Steel from controlling successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Steel in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Steel wants to pass the guard but Black is keeping the position.
Black can't keep his opponent in guard - Steel advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Steel is thwarting Black's attempts to control the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Black throws a shot from downtown. Steel moves away and avoids it.
Black throws a hook to the side of Steel's head but Steel sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Steel steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Black.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Julian Steel dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Steel trying to control the position from guard on top but Black is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Black looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Steel pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Black is keeping the position for now.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Black is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Steel.
Steel moves out of range of the strikes.
Steel shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Black as he jumps to the side.
Black throws a sloppy head kick and Steel moves out of range easily.
Steel shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Black sprawls well. Black wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Steel gets slowly back to his feet.
Steel takes one on the chin but seems OK.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Black throws a right hand that Steel ducks under and follows up with a left that Steel also avoids with ease.
Steel keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Black.
Steel slips under a jab.
Steel dives in and grabs Black's left leg, looking for a takedown. Black pushes down on Steel's head and hops out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Julian Steel. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Steel uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Black.
Black throws the left hand but Steel avoids the punch easily.
Steel shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Black as he avoids it easily.
Steel shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Black defends it nicely.
Steel shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Black but Black pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Steel slips a jab and a cross from Black.
A swing and a miss from Black.
Black looks to land a combination but Steel avoids it well.

Steel shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Black really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Steel looking to finish with strikes here!
Steel is in the full mount, landing strikes.

Steel thowing shots but they're missing.

Black is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
BOOM! Steel connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Black tries to reverse the position but Steel maintains control.
Steel scoring with strikes but Black is staying in there.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Black is in all sorts of trouble here.
Steel content just to control the position here.

And that's the end of the fight!
Julian Steel showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Steel has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
