PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Maurice McDonald (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Borden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Robert Borden will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Maurice McDonald!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Robert Borden!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, John Mangel and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Borden drives through and clinches with McDonald against the cage.

Borden decides to pull guard.
McDonald stands up over Borden, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
McDonald postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Borden throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Borden tries to land a sweep but no joy.
McDonald knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Borden on the ground.

Borden is looking for a triangle but McDonald pushes his legs off easily.
Borden looking for a sweep. Not yet Borden, not yet.
Borden is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

McDonald trying to control the position from guard on top but Borden is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Borden manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
McDonald is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

McDonald holds on, trying desperately to control.
McDonald keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Borden jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but McDonald manages to avoid the submission attempt.
McDonald tries to buck Borden off but Borden is having none of it.
Borden working away.

Borden stands up and we're back to a striking position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
McDonald shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Borden pinned against the cage. Borden gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
McDonald shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Borden sprawls well. Borden wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. McDonald gets slowly back to his feet.

McDonald gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Borden pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McDonald is keeping the position for now.
McDonald wants to get back to his feet but Borden is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

McDonald manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Borden throws and low kick but McDonald moves out of range easily.

and Borden counters with a single leg into guard. McDonald didn't expect that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maurice McDonald. That's going to take a lot out of him.
McDonald is breathing heavily.
McDonald wants to sweep here but Borden controlling him for the moment.
Borden wants to control from the top but McDonald keeps moving.

Borden gets to his feet - McDonald follows without any prompting.

and McDonald counters with a nice double leg into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McDonald lands a couple of digs.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
McDonald stops Borden from standing up.
McDonald is stalling in the full guard.
McDonald scoring with some ground and pound.
McDonald controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
McDonald seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Borden for as long as he can get away with.
Borden is trying to control the position from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Robert Borden will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



McDonald drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
McDonald wants to pass the guard but Borden is keeping the position.
Borden controls McDonald momentarily but McDonald frees himself.
Borden lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for McDonald!
Borden avoids the attempt from McDonald to control.
McDonald is bucking up trying to escape but Borden cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
McDonald is squirming around, avoiding Borden's attempts to control the action.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Borden is breathing heavily.
McDonald is working to get back to half guard.
McDonald wants to hold on but Borden pushes him away.
Borden trying to control but McDonald is having none of it.
McDonald tries to control Borden's body but Borden pushes him off. McDonald squirms to his side and now Borden has his back!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
You can see the frustration on McDonald's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
McDonald trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
McDonald looking very determined here, making life difficult for Borden.
McDonald rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
McDonald is trying to stand up here but Borden is controlling him well.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

McDonald feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Borden is looking to stand up but McDonald isn't so interested in that idea.
McDonald controls from within his opponent's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Borden wants to sweep here but McDonald controlling him for the moment.
McDonald slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
McDonald postures up and lands a big shot to Borden's brow.
Maurice McDonald overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
McDonald with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
McDonald cracks Borden with a solid left hand.
McDonald trying to control but Borden is working from the bottom.
Borden has momentary wrist control but McDonald slips an elbow through the middle.

McDonald keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Borden's head.

McDonald controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
McDonald postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as McDonald accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
McDonald looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
McDonald trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Borden throws a left and a right that both miss

so McDonald counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
McDonald trying to control the position from guard on top but Borden is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
McDonald loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Borden is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Borden striking off his back but it's not causing McDonald any problems.
McDonald is standing up over Borden. Borden looks to escape but McDonald dives into side control.
Borden can't do much from the bottom here.
McDonald lands a nice forearm strike.
McDonald moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Borden takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

McDonald scoring with punches from side control.
Borden looks to move to half guard but instead McDonald has passed into mount! Damn!
McDonald with shots to the head and body - Borden looks very uncomfortable down there.
McDonald connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
McDonald lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Borden is desperately trying to improve his position but McDonald has a good base and remains in mount.

Borden is rocked!

Borden is still in real trouble! Can McDonald finish him?
McDonald postures up and throws a big right hand. BOOM! Right on the button! Borden is out cold - huge knockout for McDonald!
