PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roger Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bobba Sapp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Bone Crusher (Big Jones) . Sapp is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by SHAFT- Isaac hayes. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Roger Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Bobba Sapp!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Andrew Berry and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones clinches up with Sapp and pushes him back against the ropes.
Sapp misses with a body punch.
Sapp prevents a takedown attempt there.
Jones stalling in the clinch.
Jones is working for takedown but Sapp is calmly controlling the position for now.
Sapp swings wildly with an uppercut but Jones uses good head movement to avoid it.
Sapp wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Jones turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Jones postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Jones wants to control but Sapp is keeping him busy.
Sapp is trying to control Jones's posture but Jones avoids it.
Jones throws an elbow but Sapp slips to the side and avoids it well.

Jones is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sapp is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Jones working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Jones throws an elbow but Sapp slips to the side and avoids it well.
Jones throwing strikes but Sapp manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Jones is looking for a sweep.
Jones is trying to control Sapp's posture but Sapp avoids it.

Sapp stands up.
Jones misses with a jab, cross combination.

Sapp fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Jones looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Jones takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Jones is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A punch lands to the side of Jones 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Sapp lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!


It looks like Roger Jones has been cut.
Sapp lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Sapp wants to clinch but Jones slips to the side

and Jones counters with a nice double leg into side control. Sapp won't be happy with that.
Jones wants to control for a moment but Sapp uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.
Sapp regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Jones.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sapp manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Jones manages to get himself to full guard.
Sapp postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Jones preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Sapp would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Jones is working an open guard so Sapp takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Sapp misses with a series of wild punches.
Sapp lands with a hook. Jones tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Sapp throws a jab but it's blocked by Jones.

Jones drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Sapp is trying to improve his position.
The strikes coming from Jones are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Sapp struggling a bit here.
Sapp is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Jones wants to pass to mount but Sapp is defending the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bobba Sapp dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Roger Jones's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Jones feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Jones's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Sapp preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Jones throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Sapp works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Sapp not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Jones throws and elbow that misses. Sapp uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jones's guard. Nice move by Sapp!
Jones looking to hit a scissor sweep but Sapp is one step ahead there.
Jones might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Sapp is looking to work some ground and pound but Jones has wrist control.
Sapp is breathing heavily.

Jones wants to stand and escape but Sapp is having none of it.
Jones has a closed guard, preventing Sapp from standing up.
Jones on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Jones tries to get out of the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Jones takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Sapp is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Jones staying out of range there.
Jones tries to score a power double leg takedown but Sapp sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Jones somewhat.
Jones fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Sapp throws a quick inside leg kick.
Sapp lands a nice shot that snaps Jones's head back.
Sapp connects with a nice looking jab.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Nice uppercut there from Sapp.
Bobba Sapp is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Sapp swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Jones.
Sapp fails to land with a series of punches.
Sapp fails with an attempt to clinch.
Sapp stalks Jones and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Jones's face. Jones staggers backwards, shaken.
Sapp moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Jones takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Jones tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Sapp connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Jones's hands.
Jones walks into a left hand.
Jones looks to land a combination but Sapp avoids it well.
Sapp scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Sapp connects with a jab.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Sapp clinches up against the ropes.
Sapp misses with a body punch.

Sapp escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Jones closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Sapp misses with a straight right.
Sapp has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Jones changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Sapp tries to avoid it but Jones manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Sapp to the ground. Sapp escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roger Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sapp with a nice cross.
Jones has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Jones there as he acknowledges the shot.
Jones shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sapp as he jumps to the side.
Sapp tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it.
Jones stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jones wants it to stay on the feet.
Sapp has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Sapp tries to clinch up but Jones circles away and keeps his distance.
Jones shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Jones takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Jones keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
A combination from Sapp does no damage.

Jones closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Jones lands in his opponent's guard.

Jones won't allow Sapp to sweep him here.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Bobba Sapp showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Sapp tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it.
Sapp throws a jab when Jones was well out of range.

Jones shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Jones keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Sapp won't allow Jones to pass to mount.
Roger Jones overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Jones is keen to just control but Sapp is a slippery customer.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Jones thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Jones throwing shots but Sapp is blocking nicely.
Jones scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Sapp keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sapp misses with a double jab.
Jones paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Sapp swings for the body but Jones moves out of range.

Jones wants to pass the guard but Sapp is keeping the position.

Jones slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Jones lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Jones postures up in Sapp's guard and throws a big left but Sapp blocks it.

Sapp tries to close the distance and clinch but Jones swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Sapp jabs Jones right on the nose. Jones blinks but takes it well.
Sapp connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

and Sapp counters with a series of strikes. Jones will be more careful next time no doubt.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Sapp has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Jones is working away from the top position though.
Bobba Sapp is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Sapp avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Jones.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Roger Jones.
I think Sapp has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
