Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gilmar Fonseca! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Taka Tanaka! The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Ivan Kurochkin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tanaka scores with a hook to the body. Fonseca takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. The fighters circling - Tanaka throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Fonseca stuffs the takedown. Nice sprawl there from Fonseca as Tanaka shoots in. Fonseca pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Tanaka misses the shot to the body. Fonseca shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Tanaka actively working from the bottom here. Fonseca throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Fonseca thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Tanaka's head. Tanaka works his way to full guard. Good work. Tanaka bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Fonseca's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Tanaka landing with the ground and pound. Fonseca throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Tanaka postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Fonseca is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Tanaka, into his guard. Fonseca throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Tanaka works some decent striking defense from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Fonseca with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Tanaka is looking for a triangle but Fonseca pushes his legs off easily.
Fonseca trying to control but Tanaka is working from the bottom. Tanaka looking for a guillotine here but Fonseca defends easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fonseca throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Tanaka works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Fonseca postures up in Tanaka's guard and throws a big left but Tanaka blocks it. Fonseca loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Fonseca accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Fonseca is looking to work some ground and pound but Tanaka has wrist control. Tanaka working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Fonseca doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Tanaka is tightening it up a little... Fonseca has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Fonseca reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Fonseca taps out! nice BJJ there by Tanaka!
