PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rick Flare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Terry Striker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Flare comes to the cage accompanied by Also Sprach Zarathustra. There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rick Flare!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Terry Striker!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Steve Erwin and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Flare on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Striker looks to land a combination but Flare avoids it well.
Striker wants to clinch.
Striker tests Flare's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Flare scores a takedown into full mount!
Flare tries to control but Striker wriggling away.
Flare working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Flare with shots to the head and body - Striker looks very uncomfortable down there.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Flare working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Striker wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Flare.
Flare looking to control but Striker is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Flare is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Striker has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Striker bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Flare bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Striker's guard.
Flare trying to control the position from guard on top but Striker is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Flare stands and throws Striker's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Striker tries to buck Flare off but Flare is having none of it.
Striker can't do much from the bottom here.
Flare tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Striker sneaks back into half guard.
Striker is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Flare throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Striker is trying to maintain the position but Flare is very close to passing his half guard.
Flare is trying to control. Striker wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Striker swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Flare.

Striker gets caught flat footed, as Flare shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Flare throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Striker works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Striker wants to sweep here but Flare controlling him for the moment.

Striker is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Flare scoring with punches to the head and body.
Flare being controlled here momentarily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Flare accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Flare postures up in Striker's guard and throws a big left but Striker blocks it.
Flare throwing strikes from guard but Striker blocks nicely.
Striker is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Flare trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Striker manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Flare is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Flare keeping moving, preventing Striker from controlling successfully.
Striker prevents Flare from getting back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Striker thows a left - swing and a miss!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Striker scores with a kick to the midsection.
Flare is breathing heavily.
Striker throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Striker swinging wildly here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Rick Flare will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Striker lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Striker.
Striker swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Striker misses with a series of wild punches.
Flare slips a straight right by Striker.
A head kick misses from Striker.
Flare shoots in for a double leg but Striker sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Flare shoots in for a takedown but Striker shows good takedown defense.
Flare uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Striker.

Flare drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Flare has gone for a leg lock! Striker slips out almost immediately though and dives into Flare's guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Striker tries to stand but Flare is controlling from the bottom.
Striker looking to sit in guard and control but Flare gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Striker is on top in guard.

Flare looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Striker wants to control from the top but Flare keeps moving.
Striker working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Flare bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Striker's guard.
Striker throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Flare won't allow Striker to sweep him here.
Flare tries to free his leg and advance position but Striker is retaining full guard.
Striker looking to hit a scissor sweep but Flare is one step ahead there.
Flare pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Striker is keeping the position for now.

Flare has gone for a leg lock! Striker slips out almost immediately though and dives into Flare's guard.

Striker in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Flare looking for a guillotine here but Striker defends easily.
Striker looking to sit in guard and control but Flare gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Flare throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Striker works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Striker throws some shots to the body, keeping his opponent honest.
Striker looking to hit a scissor sweep but Flare is one step ahead there.
Flare throwing strikes but missing.
Flare with a flurry of punches that miss.
Striker manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Striker goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Flare turns into him and now he's in Striker's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Terry Striker showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


A nice combination there by Striker.
Flare keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Flare throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Striker was covering up waiting for the punch and Flare finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Striker preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Flare drops back, looking for a kneebar! Striker looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Striker looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Striker!

Striker working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Flare gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Flare is staying active underneath Striker, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Ground and pound from Striker.
Striker throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Flare is looking for a sweep. Striker is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Flare wants to control but Striker is keeping busy.
Striker is looking to advance position but Flare won't allow it.

Flare makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Striker throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Striker thuds his right hand into Flare's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Striker connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Flare momentarily.

Striker takes the fight into the clinch.
Good body shot from Flare.

Flare turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Flare manages to end up in side control.
Striker misses with an elbow from the bottom.
Striker is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Flare off and has taken his back!
Will Striker go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Striker is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Flare looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

Flare is in a bad position with Striker working for a choke. Flare manages to spin nicely into guard and the danger is over for the moment.

Flare drops back looking for a leg! Striker is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Striker manages to kick Flare off! Flare jumps back into Striker's guard.
Flare wants to pass the guard but Striker is keeping the position.
Flare loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Striker looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Striker uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Flare.
No joy there for Striker, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Flare doesn't manage to clinch there - Striker circles away.
Striker looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Striker tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Flare gets a takedown into half guard.

Flare is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Striker is controlling Flare's trapped leg to prevent Flare from advancing to side control.

Flare seems to be working for a kimura but Striker defends the submission attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Rick Flare.
I think Flare has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
