Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marlon Mattias! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nicholas Espiritu! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Luis Engracia and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Espiritu misses with a jab, cross combination.
Espiritu throws a series of punches but Mattias avoids them all with ease. Espiritu shoots in for a double leg but Mattias sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Espiritu lands a two punch combo.
Mattias lands a big uppercut and Espiritu crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Espiritu looks OK.

It looks like Nicholas Espiritu has been cut. Espiritu trying to control but Mattias postures up.

He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Mattias lands a couple of digs. Mattias has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Mattias stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Espiritu swivels though and keeps the full guard. Mattias drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mattias jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Mattias tries to close the distance and clinch but Espiritu swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Espiritu ducks under a wild hook from Mattias. Mattias keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Espiritu looks to land a combination but Mattias avoids it well. Espiritu tries to bum rush Mattias with a series of wild strikes but Mattias uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Espiritu tries for a takedown but Mattias sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Marlon Mattias has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nicholas Espiritu. Espiritu throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Mattias's waist but Mattias gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Espiritu off to one side. Espiritu misses with a wild combination.

Mattias breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Mattias missing with a left hand there. Espiritu was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Nice sprawl there from Mattias as Espiritu shoots in. Espiritu tries for a takedown but Mattias sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Espiritu looks frusrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Mattias tries to clinch but Espiritu is having none of it. Mattias closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Mattias is looking to take a break and control but Espiritu is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Espiritu really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mattias. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Mattias is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Espiritu is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Mattias is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Espiritu has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Espiritu sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Espiritu moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Espiritu seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Espiritu wants to stand but Mattias is controlling the position. Mattias looking to pass the guard. Espiritu pushes Mattias off and scrambles back to his feet.
Espiritu tries for a takedown but Mattias circles away easily so Mattias counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Mattias wants to control from the top but Espiritu keeps moving. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mattias manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Mattias feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Espiritu is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Espiritu trying to control the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Espiritu moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body. Espiritu throws a series of strikes that have Mattias backpedaling.
Espiritu drives through with a takedown into guard. Espiritu slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Marlon Mattias. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mattias, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
