Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mathew Briar! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shawn Newman! The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, William Peck and Gregory Folan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Newman fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Briar swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Newman. Briar lands a slapping body shot.
Mathew Briar seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A left and a right from Briar both land. Nice combination.
It looks like Shawn Newman has been cut. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Newman takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Briar feints and as Newman raises his hands in defense, Briar changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Newman utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Briar drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Newman dives on top into guard. Briar working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Newman doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Newman manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Newman scoring with some ground and pound. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Briar wants to get back to his feet but Newman is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Briar working for a triangle but Newman defends it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round. Briar is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Briar escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Newman gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Briar is looking for a triangle but Newman pushes his legs off easily.
Briar trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Briar wants to stand but Newman is controlling the position. Newman trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Newman avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Newman content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Newman in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Briar is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Briar escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Newman gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Briar is breathing heavily. Newman wants to control from the top but Briar keeps moving. Newman is looking to work some ground and pound but Briar has wrist control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Newman is stalling in the full guard. Newman avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Briar is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Briar is looking for a triangle but Newman pushes his legs off easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Newman is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Briar is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Newman defends well. Briar wants to stand but Newman is controlling the position. Newman trying to control the position from guard on top but Briar is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Newman seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Newman avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Newman distracts Briar with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Mathew Briar dominated that round. The cut man is working on Shawn Newman's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Newman gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Briar thows a big elbow that misses. Briar throws a big right hand that misses. Briar stands up from Newman's guard - Briar perhaps looking for a knockout. Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Briar!
Briar feints and then cracks Newman's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Newman down. Danga de danga de dang - Briar scores with a four punch combination! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Briar throws a nice inside leg kick. Briar circles away from the clinch attempt.
Briar lands a glancing blow to the side of Newman's head. Briar fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
That's one minute gone in the round. A right-left combo lands from Briar. Newman is breathing heavily. Newman misses with a kick to the body.
Briar scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Newman avoids the body shot from Briar.
Briar fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Newman avoids it really well and circles away. A shot to de liver by Briar. Beautiful body shot. A combination from Briar does no damage. The fight moves into the clinch position. Newman has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Briar avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Briar tries to land knees in the clinch but Newman avoids the damage to the body. Briar tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Newman avoids it. Briar trying to land knees to the body.
Briar is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Briar throws an elbow but it misses.

Briar drops down looking for an ankle pick but Newman pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mathew Briar. That's going to take a lot out of him. A head kick misses from Briar. Newman shoots in but Briar avoids the takedown attempt easily. Briar lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Newman closes the distance and clinches up with Briar, looking for a takedown. Newman pushes Briar against the cage but Briar circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. No joy there for Briar, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Newman throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Briar slips a jab from Newman. Nice body punch from Briar. Briar lands a jab. Briar throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Newman dodges the punch combination from Briar.
Newman walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Briar fails in his attempt to clinch. Briar uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Newman has time to react. Newman takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Danga de danga de dang - Briar scores with a four punch combination! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Briar scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Briar scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Briar is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Newman sees it coming and defends easily. Briar moves into full mount! Newman won't be happy about that! The referee warns Newman that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Newman takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Briar moves to back control. Newman avoids the strikes from Briar. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Briar looking to break Newman's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Newman remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Briar will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke! Briar trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Briar scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.

Newman is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Briar. Newman takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Nice sprawl there from Newman as Briar shoots in. Newman throws a shot from downtown. Briar moves away and avoids it. Briar lunges at Newman with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Newman's hand. Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Briar. Newman shrugs it off though. Newman blocks a head kick by Briar.
Briar thuds a left hand into Newman's body. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Briar scores with a crisp jab that stopped Newman in his tracks. Briar works the jab nicely. Newman takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Newman needs to keep his hands up - Briar had a free shot at his head there. Briar misses with a jab, cross combination.
Briar throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Newman stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Briar lands a high kick!
That's one minute gone in the round. Briar scores with a jab to the body. A cross from Briar lands. Briar scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Briar dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Briar feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Newman's calf. Briar scores with a one two! Newman had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Newman is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Briar. Briar lands with a cross. Briar's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Briar duly obliges. Newman has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. Briar comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Mathew Briar is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Briar bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut. Briar cracks Newman with an open hand slap. Thud! ouch! good body kick from Briar - that will leave a mark!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Briar, as that shot connected.
Briar has closed the distance and engaged Newman in a clinch.
Briar unloads a knee to the mid-section. Briar unloads a knee to the mid-section. Newman lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh. Briar's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Briar is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Nice straight punches there by Briar. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Briar. Briar throws a right and a left that both miss. Newman takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Briar misses with a takedown attempt and Newman counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Briar is pressing down on Newman's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Briar has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Newman should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Briar has tightened it up now! Newman should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
