The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kumar decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Kumar thows a huge punch but Ritter dodges it nicely.
Kumar wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ritter keeps working. Kumar is taking a breather. Ritter says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Ritter is looking for a sweep. Kumar is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Ritter keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Kumar is nestled in close to Ritter, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Ritter wants to improve his position but Kumar is controlling well.
Kumar slows the pace down in half guard. Kumar seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Ritter for as long as he can get away with.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ritter tries to get to full guard but Kumar has control of the leg. Ritter on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Kumar is taking a breather. That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Kumar tries to pass the half guard into mount. Ritter knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kumar eventually gives up the hold. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Kumar seems to be looking for submissions.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Kumar wants to take a breather but Ritter is having none of it.
The referee stands the fighters back up. Varun Kumar just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. Ritter looks to land a combination but Kumar avoids it well. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Varun Kumar dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Ritter rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Kumar moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Excellent takedown into side control there by Kumar. Kumar trying to control the position but Ritter is working away. Ritter is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Kumar's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Kumar is looking to advance position but Ritter won't allow it. Ritter keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Ritter trying to control here.
Kumar works his foot free and advances to mount. Kumar has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kumar trying to control but Ritter is having none of it. Kumar tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Ritter tries to lock up and control but Kumar gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Ritter is trying to escape the mount.
Kumar looking to control and managing it successfully. Kumar is landing with some decent strikes but Ritter is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Kumar controlling from the full mount. Kumar putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kumar looking to secure an arm triangle but Ritter defends it well. Kumar takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Ritter tries to hold on but Kumar pushes him away. A nice elbow there by Kumar. Kumar dominating with strikes here.
Ritter is rocked! Ritter really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kumar. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Kumar content just to control the position here. Ritter is still in real trouble! Can Kumar finish him? Kumar working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Ritter turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Kumar off and cradles Ritter's limp body as Kumar celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:01 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Varun Kumar!
