The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Refn walks into a stiff left hand from Penn.
Penn closes the distance and clinches up with Refn, looking for a takedown. Penn pushes Refn against the cage but Refn circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Penn misses with a series of wild punches.
Refn blocks a jab.
Refn digs a good hook to Penn's body.
Refn tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Penn was well out of range. Poor timing from Refn.

and Penn counters with a right hand to the body.
BJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Refn fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Penn looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Refn has his feet on Penn's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Penn misses with a takedown attempt - Refn sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Penn throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Refn sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Nicolas Refn is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Refn takes a swing at Penn's ribcage but misses.
Refn connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Penn momentarily.
Penn has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Refn lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Penn circles away quickly and effectively.
Refn fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Refn stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Refn wants it to stay on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for BJ Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
