Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Thompson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and General Taft (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Thompson comes to the cage accompanied by Lights Out. Taft has chosen "Sister Ray" as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Anthony Thompson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, General Taft!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Franklyn Lucas and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Taft shoots in but Thompson avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Taft tries to clinch up.
Taft shoots in for a double leg but Thompson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
A right-left combo lands from Thompson.
Thompson clinches but Taft breaks the clinch
and Taft counters with a nice low kick that buckles Thompson's knee momentarily.

Thompson looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Taft!
Thompson raining down shots from the mount!
Thompson thowing shots but they're missing.
Thompson throws a strike there. Taft manages to avoid it well and slips a leg under to get to half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Thompson takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Thompson not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Taft moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Thompson throws a strike but Taft rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Thompson wants to stand and escape but Taft is having none of it.

Taft postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Thompson is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Taft, into his guard.

Thompson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Taft looking to control.
Thompson is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Thompson throwing strikes but missing.
Thompson postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Thompson's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Thompson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Taft manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Thompson is breathing heavily.
Taft with shots to the head and body - Thompson looks very uncomfortable down there.
Taft looking to finish with strikes here!
Thompson is squirming around, avoiding Taft's attempts to control the action.
Taft unloads with some shots from mount but Thompson bucks and avoids them well.
Thompson on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Thompson tries to get out of the position.

Taft thowing shots but they're missing.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Thompson is trying to stand up.
Taft lands with some strikes.
Taft throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Taft misses with a head shot.
Poor strikes thrown by Taft there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Taft throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Anthony Thompson dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Taft fails with a takedown attempt.
Thompson tries to clinch but fails miserably
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Taft stuffs the takedown attempt from Thompson. Thompson gets slowly back to his feet.
Nice takedown defense from Taft. No joy for Thompson on that attempt.

and Taft counters with a nice double leg into guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anthony Thompson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Taft chips away with some ground and pound.
Taft throwing strikes but missing.
Taft trying to control the position from guard on top but Thompson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Taft with a flurry of punches that miss.
Taft has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Taft pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Thompson is keeping the position for now.
Taft is looking to work some ground and pound but Thompson has wrist control.
Taft postures up in Thompson's guard and throws a big left but Thompson blocks it.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Thompson shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Taft moves into the clinch.

Taft jumps guard.
Thompson working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Taft's head.
Thompson throws and elbow that misses. Taft uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Thompson's guard. Nice move by Taft!

Taft throws a big right hand that misses.
Taft pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Thompson is keeping the position for now.
Thompson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Taft on the ground.

Taft is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Thompson keeping moving, preventing Taft from controlling successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Thompson is looking to stand up but Taft isn't so interested in that idea.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Thompson tries for a takedown but Taft circles away easily
and Taft counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Taft rushes Thompson and presses him up against the cage.
Nice elbow from Taft.
Taft stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Taft gets control of Thompson's arms and successfully pulls guard. Taft will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Thompson working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Taft is on top in guard.
Taft advances position into side control!
Taft trying to control the action but Thompson is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

General Taft showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Taft manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Taft sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Thompson wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Taft.

Taft is working close to his opponent, looking to work a submission by the looks of things. Oh, he's managed to get a guillotine from mount as his opponent reached up! That looks tiiiiight! Will he tap? YES, he's tapped! Impressive submission by Taft!
