PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Darren Hill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ramon Labayen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Darren Hill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ramon Labayen!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and .




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hill on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Darren Hill seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hill scores with a nice body kick.
Hill tries to clinch but Labayen moves out of range.
Nice takedown defense from Labayen. No joy for Hill on that attempt.
Labayen circles away from the clinch attempt.
Hill lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Hill fails in his attempt to clinch.
Hill tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Labayen paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Hill digs a good hook to Labayen's body.
Labayen looks gassed!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Hill scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Hill scoring well with a low kick there.
Hill tries to clinch but Labayen is having none of it.
Hill looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Hill misses with a takedown attempt - Labayen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darren Hill. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Labayen circles away from the clinch attempt.
A combination from Hill does no damage.
Hill shoots in looking for a takedown. Labayen tries to sprawl out of it but Hill keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Labayen manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Hill.
Hill tries to clinch up but Labayen circles away and keeps his distance.
Hill dives in and grabs Labayen's left leg, looking for a takedown. Labayen pushes down on Hill's head and hops out.

Hill is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Labayen defends well.

Labayen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hill swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hill is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hill throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Hill is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Labayen dives into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Labayen has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Hill closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Hill lands in his opponent's guard.
Hill stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Labayen swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Labayen pulls Hill in to control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hill got a little sloppy there for a moment and Labayen has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hill has managed to get both his arms back between Labayen's legs - danger averted.
Hill wants to pass the guard but Labayen is keeping the position.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Labayen holds on and takes a little breather.

Labayen looking for a guillotine here but Hill defends easily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Labayen manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hill manages to get himself to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Darren Hill dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Hill tries to close the distance and clinch but Labayen swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Labayen stuffs the takedown attempt from Hill. Hill gets slowly back to his feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Hill is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Labayen pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Labayen dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Labayen is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Labayen has Hill pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Labayen pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Hill tumbling to the mat - Labayen dives into Hill's guard.
Hill is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hill throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Hill might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Labayen controlling from the top position.
Labayen must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Hill working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Labayen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Labayen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Labayen works over Hill with some ground and pound from guard.

Labayen stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Labayen has Hill up against the cage in a clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hill prevents a takedown attempt there.
Labayen stops a takedown attempt from Hill.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darren Hill. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Labayen has clasped his hands together around Hill's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Hill is working to avoid the ground and pound but Labayen connects with a decent elbow.
Hill is trying to escape the position but Labayen is controlling the position.
Hill is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Labayen has just dragged him back down to the mat.
The referee asks Labayen politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Labayen prefers to stall for the moment though.
Hill is trying to improve his position.

Labayen grinds an elbow into Hill's temple.
Labayen just content to control the position.
Labayen's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ramon Labayen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Labayen pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Labayen shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hill as he avoids it easily.
Hill darts in trying to clinch
and Labayen counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Hill thinking.
Hill clobbers Labayen with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hill is defended easily by Labayen.
Hill shoots for a double leg takedown but Labayen sprawls well. He's pushed Hill's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hill throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Hill gets caught flat footed, as Labayen shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Labayen lands a couple of digs.

Hill had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Labayen defends it easily.
Hill could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Labayen passes Hill's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Hill is trying to get back to full guard.
Hill is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Labayen's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Labayen's back!
Labayen looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Labayen manages to get to his feet, escaping the difficult position.
Hill works Labayen's body with a nice hook.
Labayen throws a quick inside leg kick.
Hill with a lazy takedown attempt
and Labayen counters with an inside leg kick.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darren Hill. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hill is looking to land body kicks.

Labayen closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Hill did well to prevent Labayen getting side control.

Labayen trying to mount his opponent but Hill defends it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hill pushes Labayen off looking to stand but Labayen dives back in and keeps control.
Hill is trying to control but Labayen manages to pass to mount!
Labayen looking to control and managing it successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Labayen punishing his opponent with strikes.
Labayen lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Hill defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Labayen.
Labayen controlling from the full mount.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ramon Labayen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Labayen has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
