PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between BJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diego Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mir has chosen Runnin as his entrance music. Diego Mir will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, BJ Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Diego Mir!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Tiny Johnson and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Mir looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Diego Mir seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penn avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mir is looking to clinch.
Mir tries to clinch up.
Mir doesn't manage to clinch there - Penn circles away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Mir looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Mir wants to clinch up but Penn keeps it at a distance.
Penn avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mir is looking to clinch but Penn is avoiding it.
Penn looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mir tries to clinch up but Penn circles away and keeps his distance.
Mir tries to close the distance and clinch up but Penn swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Penn shoots for a takedown but Mir saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Mir tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Penn paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Mir fails with an attempt to clinch.
Mir has his takedown stuffed

and Penn counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Penn in particular looking to stall.
Penn working over Mir with some ground and pound. Mir looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Penn is looking to stall here but Mir recovers full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mir wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Penn manages to pass to side control.
Penn not landing any meaningful shots this time.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Penn is nestled in close to Mir, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Penn with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Penn is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Penn not landing any meaningful shots this time.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Mir's thigh. Mir counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Penn tries to free his leg and advance position but Mir is retaining full guard.
Penn slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Penn postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Mir is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Penn, into his guard.
Penn manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Mir looks gassed!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Mir can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

BJ Penn dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Penn shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Mir manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Penn decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
BJ Penn is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Mir instigates a clinch.
Mir misses with a hook to the ribs.
Mir tries to throw a body punch but Penn avoids it by throwing Mir back against the cage.

Penn gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Mir regains guard.
Penn stands and throws Mir's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Penn happy to just control the position for now.
Penn landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Mir is breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn controls the position.
Penn looks up at the clock and then as Mir takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Penn smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Penn is working Mir over with some ground and pound from side control.
Penn content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Penn lands an elbow.
Penn in side control lands a decent elbow.
Penn happy to just control the position for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mir takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Mir is looking to regain half guard here but Penn keeps moving and retains side control.
Mir takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Penn cracks Mir with a big right hand but Mir just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
BJ Penn overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Penn is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mir has escaped the position, nice work there.

Penn is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Mir looks calm but he's in trouble here. Penn gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Mir is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Penn lets go of the hold and Mir can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:03 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). BJ Penn!
