The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Thomas closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming McFisticus to the mat! McFisticus manages to get full guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. McFisticus tries to land a sweep but no joy. McFisticus preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Thomas postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McFisticus is trying to keep Thomas in close.
Thomas seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Thomas wants to get up but he can't break McFisticus's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Thomas stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McFisticus swivels though and keeps the full guard. McFisticus manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Thomas manages to get himself to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. McFisticus trying to control the position from guard on top but Thomas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Thomas throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

McFisticus is really struggling to control Thomas but he's trying to hold on to the position. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. A decent looking body kick lands there for McFisticus. Thomas looks gassed! McFisticus throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
