Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rio Gracie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Macario Sakay! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sakay moves into the clinch. Gracie looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Sakay pulls Gracie into guard.
Gracie wants to control from the top but Sakay keeps moving. Sakay keeping full guard, as Gracie tries to pass. Sakay working for a triangle but Gracie defends it easily.
Gracie trying to control but Sakay is working from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sakay is trying to control the position but Gracie postures up. Sakay is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Gracie defends well. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Sakay holds on and takes a little breather. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sakay controls Gracie momentarily but Gracie frees himself.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Sakay changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gracie looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Gracie is looking to regain half guard here but Sakay keeps moving and retains side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sakay is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Gracie is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Gracie sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Gracie looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Sakay is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sakay tries to stand but can't do so whilst Gracie controls his leg. Sakay is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gracie defends it well.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Sakay closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Gracie did well to prevent Sakay getting side control. Gracie wants to improve his position but Sakay is controlling well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gracie actively working from the bottom here. Gracie looking for submissions off his back. Sakay looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
