PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Richard Butts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rolo Pup (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Butts comes to the cage accompanied by Flight of the Conchords - Business Time. Pup is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Stone Cold. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Richard Butts!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rolo Pup!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Butts just misses with a punch to the body.
Butts misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Pup tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Pup shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Butts sprawls well. Butts wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Pup gets slowly back to his feet.
Butts takes a swing at Pup's ribcage but misses.
Butts shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Pup counters with a shoot takedown. Butts fights it but they end up in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Butts wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Pup with a flurry of punches that miss.
Butts wants to sweep here but Pup controlling him for the moment.
Pup working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Pup decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Butts, up you get!
Butts throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Pup sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Butts tries for a takedown but Pup circles away easily

and Pup counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Pup stands and steps away. Butts gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Pup looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Butts might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Pup has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Butts is proving hard to escape from.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pup looking to sit in guard and control but Butts gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Pup controlling the position.
Butts missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Pup avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Butts is looking to stand up but Pup won't let him.
Butts has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Pup is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Butts landing some decent shots from guard.
Pup looking for a sweep. Not yet Pup, not yet.
Butts is looking to work some ground and pound but Pup has wrist control.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Pup bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Pup takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.


It looks like Rolo Pup has been cut.
Richard Butts seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pup throws a series of punches but Butts moves out of range.
Butts misses with a looping right.
Butts throws a left and a right that both miss

and Pup counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Pup keeps control of Butts as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Butts tries to clinch but Pup moves away

and Pup decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Butts's guard.
Butts is breathing heavily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Pup is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Butts trying to control the position.
Butts knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Pup on the ground.
Pup loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Butts pushes Pup off and scrambles back to his feet.
Pup slips under a jab.
Butts on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Butts misses with a combination

and Pup counters with a nice double leg into side control. Butts won't be happy with that.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Butts is not content to let Pup control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Pup is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Butts has escaped the position, nice work there.

Pup is trying to get an arm triangle but Butts is defending well.
Butts is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Pup has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Butts is looking for a sweep.

Pup decides to stand up, so the ref orders Butts to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Butts misses with a combination

and Pup counters with a single leg into guard. Butts didn't expect that.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Pup wants to pass the guard but Butts is keeping the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rolo Pup dominated that round.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Butts misses with a takedown

and Pup decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Butts's guard.
Pup postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Pup postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Butts is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Pup, into his guard.

Pup looking to hit a scissor sweep but Butts is one step ahead there.
Pup not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Butts keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Pup's head.

Butts decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Pup fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Pup has taken the fight to the clinch.
Butts is pressed up against the cage. Pup has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Butts down to the mat. Butts avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Pup avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Pup uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Butts.
Pup steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Butts.
Butts tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Pup paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Pup looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Butts is fending him off so far but Pup persists. Nope, Butts circles away and we're back to standing.
Richard Butts has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rolo Pup.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Butts connects with a single shot there.
A big right from Butts misses.
Butts fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Pup closes the distance and clinches.
Butts wants to break the clinch but can't.
Pup has Butts pressed against the cage, preventing Butts from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Pup lands a nice uppercut.
Pup lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Pup escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Pup shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Pup tries to clinch there but Butts circles away.

and Pup counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Pup.
Pup sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Butts's guard.
Butts is refusing to be controlled, as Pup sits in half guard.

Pup is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Butts doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Pup.

Pup is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Butts has managed to free his arm - good work.
Butts tries to get to full guard but Pup has control of the leg.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pup is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Pup with a couple of short strikes.
Butts on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Butts tries to get out of the position.
Pup can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Butts is looking to escape.
Pup breaks from Butts's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Pup prevents Butts from getting the reversal.

Butts defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Pup.
Pup throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Butts because Pup loaded up on that one.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rolo Pup showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Butts fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Butts avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Pup tries to clinch there but Butts circles away.
Butts throws a left and a right that both miss
and Pup counters with a series of strikes. Butts will be more careful next time no doubt.

Pup swings for the body but Butts moves out of range.
Butts slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Butts shoots for a double leg takedown but Pup sprawls well. He's pushed Butts's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Pup scores with a three punch combo!
Butts misses with a straight right.
Pup fails with the takedown
and Butts counters with a nice low kick that buckles Pup's knee momentarily.
Richard Butts has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rolo Pup.

and Pup counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Butts is trying to control the position but Pup postures up.
Pup looking to pass the guard.
Butts bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pup's guard.
Pup is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Pup controls Butts momentarily but Butts frees himself.

Pup might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Butts kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Pup is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Butts is looking to work some ground and pound but Pup has wrist control.

Butts gets to his feet - Pup follows without any prompting.

Pup shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Butts is trying to defend but Pup finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Butts wants to get back to his feet.
Pup trying to control from Butts's half guard. Butts has other ideas though and has regained full guard.

Butts scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Pup shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Pup is trying to control. Butts wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Pup not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Rolo Pup has got the better of the ground game so far.

Pup is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Butts defends it well.
Pup is keen to just control but Butts is a slippery customer.
Rolo Pup is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Butts is looking to control Pup's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Butts avoid being mounted?
Pup throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Butts is not content to let Pup control the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Pup circles away from the clinch attempt

and Pup counters with a nice double leg into side control. Butts won't be happy with that.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Pup is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Butts is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rolo Pup comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Pup winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
