PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Yuri Orlov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Grey Te Whena (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Te Whena has chosen Garden Knome - Barbarella as his entrance music. Yuri Orlov had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Yuri Orlov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Grey Te Whena!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Winston Howard and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Te Whena throws a hook to the side of Orlov's head but Orlov sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Te Whena keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Te Whena throws a nice inside leg kick.
Te Whena shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Orlov as he jumps to the side.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Orlov.

Orlov goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Te Whena rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Orlov's guard! Nice work there by Te Whena!
Orlov avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Te Whena wants to stand but Orlov has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Te Whena throws a strike but Orlov rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Orlov wants to control from the top but Te Whena keeps moving.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Te Whena steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Orlov.

Te Whena throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Orlov.

Orlov shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Te Whena's guard.

Orlov throws and elbow that misses. Te Whena uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Orlov's guard. Nice move by Te Whena!

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Te Whena accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Orlov is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Orlov seems to be working for a kimura but Te Whena defends the submission attempt.
Te Whena gets full guard.
Orlov wants to control from the top but Te Whena keeps moving.
Orlov might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Te Whena is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Orlov tries to free his leg and advance position but Te Whena is retaining full guard.
Te Whena looking to hit a scissor sweep but Orlov is one step ahead there.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Orlov misses with a jab, cross combination.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Yuri Orlov will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Te Whena bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Te Whena lands a slapping body shot.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Orlov tries to bum rush Te Whena with a series of wild strikes but Te Whena uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Te Whena tries a head kick but it misses.
Orlov misses with a body shot.
Orlov shoots for a double leg takedown but Te Whena sprawls well. He's pushed Orlov's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Orlov misses with a few strikes there.
Orlov throws a right and a left that both miss.
Te Whena misses with a double jab.
Orlov ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Te Whena jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Te Whena misses with a head kick.
Orlov scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Te Whena throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Orlov.
Orlov will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Yuri Orlov is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Orlov darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Orlov is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Orlov is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Te Whena is just riding it out for now. Orlov eventually gives up the hold.

Orlov is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Orlov thows a huge punch but Te Whena dodges it nicely.

Orlov seems to be trying to get a kimura but instead Te Whena has recovered full guard.
Orlov wants to control from the top but Te Whena keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Orlov is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Te Whena is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Te Whena is pulling down on Orlov's head to control his posture.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Te Whena is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Orlov is controlling him.
Orlov looking to pass the guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Orlov ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Te Whena moves away.
Orlov throws a series of strikes that have Te Whena backpedaling.
Orlov fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Orlov throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Te Whena's waist but Te Whena gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Orlov off to one side.
Orlov throws a series of punches but Te Whena avoids them all with ease.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Orlov tries to score a power double leg takedown but Te Whena sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Orlov somewhat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Yuri Orlov. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Te Whena throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Te Whena throws a sloppy head kick and Orlov moves out of range easily.
Orlov throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Te Whena stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Grey Te Whena will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Orlov moves out of range as Te Whena strikes.

Orlov changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Te Whena looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Orlov tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Orlov has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Te Whena is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Orlov's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Orlov wants to pass to mount but Te Whena is defending the position.
Te Whena wants to improve his position but Orlov is controlling well.

Orlov is working for a submission of some sort.
Te Whena is trying to stand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Te Whena is on the bottom, trying to hold on to half guard. He's throwing a few small shots here, to keep his opponent honest.
Te Whena looks like he's trying to stand up.

Yuri Orlov showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Orlov has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
