PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jon Bane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bas Rutten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bas Rutten told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Jon Bane!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Bas Rutten!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, James Atkins and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bane tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Rutten paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Rutten looks to score with a jab to the body but Bane is just out of range.
Bane showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Rutten.
Bas Rutten seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bane throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Bane is looking to clinch but Rutten is avoiding it.
Nice sprawl there from Rutten as Bane shoots in.
Bane blocks a jab.
Rutten moves out of range of the leg kick from Bane.
Bane takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Bane looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Rutten is fending him off so far but Bane persists. Nope, Rutten circles away and we're back to standing.
Nice takedown defense from Rutten. No joy for Bane on that attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jon Bane. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rutten tries to clinch up but Bane circles away and keeps his distance.

Bane gets the takedown into side control.
Rutten tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Bane wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Bane tries for a kimura but Rutten is defending well.
Rutten prevents Bane from improving position.
Rutten is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Bane working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Rutten is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Bane wants to take a breather but Rutten is having none of it.

Rutten has one foot on Bane's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Bane is breathing heavily.
Bane lands with a thumping leg kick.
Bane fails with a takedown attempt.
Rutten lands with a shot to the body.

Rutten bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Bane is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Rutten's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Rutten seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Rutten lands a nice short elbow.
Rutten is tying to control. Bane wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rutten is nestled in close to Bane, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Bane won't allow Rutten to pass to mount.
Bane is pressing down on Rutten's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Rutten really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Bane. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Bane had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Rutten is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Bane Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Rutten's back instead.

Bane is cranking Rutten's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Rutten! He's tightened the choke and Rutten is tapping out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:32 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Jon Bane!
Jon Bane retains his welterweight title!
