PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Luke Hilton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Ward (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ward comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Converge - No Heroes kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Luke Hilton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Ward!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ward lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Hilton fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Ward scores with a punch to the head.
Ward lunges at Hilton with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Hilton's hand.
Hilton throws a series of punches but Ward moves out of range.
Ward tries to close the distance and clinch up but Hilton swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Hilton darts in and clinches Ward up against the cage.
Come on Hilton - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Ward wants to get back to striking at distance but Hilton won't allow it.
Hilton has Ward pressed against the cage, preventing Ward from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Ward wants to break free but Hilton has control.

Hilton manages to break the clinch.
Hilton throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Ward stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Hilton tries to move into range but Ward moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Hilton misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Ward closes the distance but Hilton moves to the side
and Hilton counters with a nice body shot.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Hilton scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Hilton throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Hilton trying to advance position but Ward counters by regaining guard.

Ward working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Hilton.

Ward is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Hilton is controlling him.
Hilton loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Hilton wants to pass the guard but Ward is keeping the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Ward takes a shot right to the bread basket.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Hilton tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ward sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Hilton somewhat.

Hilton gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Hilton keeps control of Ward as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Ward is trying to break the clinch but Hilton is controlling him.
A frustrated look appears on Ward's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Ward looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Ward fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Hilton pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Hilton throws a hook but Ward blocks it.

so Hilton counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hilton in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Hilton sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Ward keeping moving, preventing Hilton from controlling successfully.
Hilton throwing strikes but missing.
Hilton working some strikes from top position.
Hilton lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Hilton trying to control but Ward is working from the bottom.
Hilton looking to sit in guard and control but Ward gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hilton is trying to control the position but Ward postures up.
Ward tries to stand but Hilton is controlling from the bottom.
Hilton wants to improve his position but instead Ward has moved into half guard.
Hilton flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hilton is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Luke Hilton dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Ward wants to clinch but Hilton slips to the side
and Hilton counters with a straight right hand.
Ward looks to score with a jab to the body but Hilton is just out of range.

and Hilton counters with a series of strikes. Ward will be more careful next time no doubt.
Hilton lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Ward misses with a telegraphed body shot

and Hilton counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Ward's guard now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hilton postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Ward is trying to control the position but Hilton postures up.
Hilton throws and elbow that misses. Ward uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hilton's guard. Nice move by Ward!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Hilton looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Ward puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Ward seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

enabling Hilton to counter with a crisp jab.
Jack Ward seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ward dips to his left and cracks Hilton with an uppercut!

Hilton has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Hilton thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Ward's head.
Ward takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Hilton looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Ward with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Ward is staying active underneath Hilton, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Hilton is nestled in close to Ward, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Hilton wants to control but Ward is keeping him busy.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hilton connects with a nice short shot to Ward's temple.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Hilton lands a nice short elbow.

Hilton is looking for a kimura but Ward is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Hilton to get the leverage.
Hilton is stalling here. Ward is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Hilton seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Ward has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Hilton looks to move to half guard but instead Ward has passed into mount! Damn!

Luke Hilton is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Ward is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.

Luke Hilton showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Hilton has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
