The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Specimen throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Specimen is looking to clinch but Karelin is avoiding it.
Nice takedown defense from Specimen. No joy for Karelin on that attempt. Specimen looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Specimen scores with a decent looking hook. Karelin uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Specimen.
Karelin has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Specimen finds it's way round the side to connect with Karelin's head. Specimen tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target. Specimen stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Specimen wants it to stay on the feet. Karelin avoids a punch combination nicely.
Karelin moves in looking to clinch but Specimen pushes him off. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Karelin. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Karpo Karelin. That's going to take a lot out of him. Karelin looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Specimen tries to bum rush Karelin with a series of wild strikes but Karelin uses good footwork to avoid the assault. A head kick misses from Specimen. Specimen uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
It looks like Karpo Karelin has been cut. Specimen leaves Karelin with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Excellent takedown into side control there by Karelin. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Specimen is looking to reverse the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Karelin tries to score with some ground and pound. Specimen controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Specimen tries to improve position but can't. Specimen manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Specimen tries to pass to full mount but Karelin defends it. Specimen seems to be working for a kimura but Karelin defends the submission attempt.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Karelin swings away with a body shot that misses
and Specimen counters with a one-two to the body. Karelin will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Karelin is breathing heavily. Specimen changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Karelin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Karelin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Specimen wants to hold on but Karelin pushes him away. Specimen is desperately trying to improve his position but Karelin has a good base and remains in mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Karelin cracks Specimen with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Specimen keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Karelin is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Specimen can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
This has been an exciting period of action! Specimen wants to hold on but Karelin pushes him away. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Karelin cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Specimen can't escape the position.
Karelin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Karelin landing strikes from the mount. Karelin cracks Specimen with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
