PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Robyn Alexander (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marko Ruas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Marko Ruas told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Robyn Alexander!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Marko Ruas!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruas jabs Alexander right on the nose. Alexander blinks but takes it well.
Alexander has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Alexander shoots in but no luck this time.

Alexander gets the takedown into side control.
Ruas pushes Alexander away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Alexander gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Ruas avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Alexander.

Alexander decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Ruas gets caught flat footed, as Alexander shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Ruas wants to stand and escape but Alexander is having none of it.

Alexander has gone for a leg lock! Ruas slips out almost immediately though and dives into Alexander's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ruas accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Ruas wants to get up but he can't break Alexander's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Alexander utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Ruas is in close to Alexander's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Ruas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Alexander. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Ruas misses with a jab, cross combination.
Ruas tries to bum rush Alexander with a series of wild strikes but Alexander uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Ruas throws a right hand that Alexander ducks under and follows up with a left that Alexander also avoids with ease.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ruas wants to stand but Alexander is controlling the position.
Alexander keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Ruas's head.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ruas can do anything to dispel that myth.

Ruas pushes Alexander off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Alexander shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Ruas as he jumps to the side.

Ruas scores with a one two! Alexander had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
A left and a right from Ruas both land. Nice combination.
A decent looking body kick lands there for Ruas.
Ruas lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Ruas.
Alexander throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ruas's waist but Ruas gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Alexander off to one side.

Ruas pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Alexander has a takedown stuffed.
Ruas throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Marko Ruas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Alexander.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Alexander unloads with some shots from mount but Ruas bucks and avoids them well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Robyn Alexander will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Ruas scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Ruas will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Ruas lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Alexander shoots in but no luck this time.

Marko Ruas is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Alexander shoots for a double leg takedown but Ruas sprawls well. He's pushed Alexander's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ruas lands a two punch combo.
Ruas connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Alexander drops his hands momentarily and Ruas takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Ruas's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Ruas duly obliges.
Ruas pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Alexander shoots in but no luck this time.
Alexander drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Alexander throws a nice looking combination but Ruas bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Alexander drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Ruas is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Alexander asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Alexander is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ruas is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Alexander is trying to get an arm triangle but Ruas is defending well.

Ruas is pushing Alexander's head away, looking to escape. Alexander manages to hold on to the position though.

Alexander tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Ruas is trying to get back to his feet.
Alexander lands an elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Alexander's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Ruas scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Alexander doesn't seem bothered though.
Ruas works over Alexander's head and body with a nice combination.

Alexander shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ruas but Ruas pushes him off and we're back to square one.

The fighters circle momentarily. Ruas darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Ruas throws a head kick but Alexander moves out of range.
Ruas connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Alexander tries to clinch but Ruas is having none of it.
Alexander tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ruas sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Alexander somewhat.

Ruas lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Alexander looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

Ruas cracks Alexander with a right hand to the side of the head.
Ruas lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Alexander circles away quickly and effectively.
Ruas throws a left and a right that both miss

and Alexander counters with a single leg into guard. Ruas didn't expect that.

Robyn Alexander overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Alexander is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Alexander slips under a jab from Ruas.

Alexander shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Alexander seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ruas does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Ruas is trying to stand back up but Alexander is controlling him

Alexander is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ruas defends it well.
