Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Wojtek Svalbard! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matthew Hopkinson! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Skip Squint and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Svalbard takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
It looks like Wojtek Svalbard has been cut. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Hopkinson. Svalbard fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Hopkinson shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Svalbard counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Hopkinson is trying to maintain the position but Svalbard is very close to passing his half guard. Hopkinson looks like he's trying to stand up.
Svalbard thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Svalbard takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Svalbard has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Hopkinson wants to get back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Svalbard in particular looking to stall. Svalbard's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Hopkinson trying to control but Svalbard postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Svalbard slows the pace down in half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Hopkinson is trying to stand.

Hopkinson gets back to half guard. Svalbard is breathing heavily. Svalbard content to control rather than advance. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Hopkinson keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Hopkinson wants to control the action here but instead Svalbard manages to pass to full mount!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Svalbard tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Svalbard avoids the attempt from Hopkinson to control. The fight stays on the outside here - Svalbard looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Hopkinson throws a nice looking combination but Svalbard bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Svalbard tries to clinch but Hopkinson is having none of it. Hopkinson is looking to clinch. Hopkinson doesn't manage to clinch there - Svalbard circles away.
Hopkinson fakes the leg kick and cracks Svalbard in the body. Hopkinson shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Svalbard counters with a nice double leg into side control. Hopkinson won't be happy with that. Hopkinson is looking for a sweep. Svalbard working away. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Svalbard landing a few strikes. Hopkinson is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Svalbard has just dragged him back down to the mat. Svalbard slows the pace down. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Svalbard decides to take the fight back to the feet. Hopkinson wants to clinch. Hopkinson doesn't succeed with the takedown and Svalbard counters with a nice double leg into guard. Svalbard working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Hopkinson's head.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Svalbard seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Hopkinson is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Svalbard is trying to control the position but Hopkinson postures up. Hopkinson trying to control the position from guard on top but Svalbard is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Hopkinson misses with a takedown attempt and Svalbard counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Hopkinson's guard now. Wojtek Svalbard has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matthew Hopkinson. Svalbard is stalling in the full guard. Hopkinson pushes Svalbard off and gets back to his feet.
Svalbard throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hopkinson misses with a takedown and Hopkinson takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Hopkinson doesn't succeed with the takedown and Svalbard counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Svalbard scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Svalbard passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Hopkinson! Svalbard working Hopkinson over with strikes here. Svalbard sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Svalbard looking for a guillotine from mount but Hopkinson is having none of it. Hopkinson is looking to get to half guard. Hopkinson has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Svalbard's lack of action.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Hopkinson actively working from the bottom here. Svalbard prevents Hopkinson from improving his position. Svalbard perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Svalbard working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Hopkinson's thigh. Hopkinson counters though and makes it back to full guard. Svalbard trying to control but Hopkinson is working from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hopkinson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Svalbard pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hopkinson is keeping the position for now. Svalbard is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Hopkinson lands a front kick.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Hopkinson fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Svalbard, pushing him back against the cage. Hopkinson decides to pull guard. Hopkinson wants to stand and escape but Svalbard is having none of it. Svalbard is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Svalbard decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Hopkinson, up you get!
And that's the end of the fight! Wojtek Svalbard showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Svalbard, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
