PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Soviet Russia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Petir Petrov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Soviet Russia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Petir Petrov!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, John Mangel and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Petrov misses with an uppercut. Russia saw that one coming.
Russia fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Petrov avoids it really well and circles away.

Russia feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Russia slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Petrov is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Russia defends well.
Petrov controls Russia momentarily but Russia frees himself.

Petrov is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Russia controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Petrov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Russia can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Russia decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Petrov, up you get!

Russia shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Petrov's guard.

Petrov is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Russia defends well.

Russia knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Petrov on the ground.

Petrov is looking for a triangle here but Russia uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
You can see the frustration on Petrov's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Russia decides to stand back up. Russia steps back and let's Petrov get back to his feet.
Petrov shoots in for a takedown but Russia shows good takedown defense.

Petrov fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Russia manages to avoid it.
Petir Petrov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Russia is looking for a sweep. Petrov is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Petrov is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Petrov is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Petrov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Russia swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Russia looking to hit a scissor sweep but Petrov is one step ahead there.

Petrov drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Russia dives on top into guard.
Russia has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Russia is looking to stand up but Petrov won't let him.

That was a close round but I would say that Soviet Russia will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Russia tries to stand but can't do so whilst Petrov controls his leg.

Petrov is trying to maintain the position but Russia is very close to passing his half guard.
Russia trying to control from half guard but Petrov is working away.
Soviet Russia overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Petrov tries to get to full guard but Russia has control of the leg.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Russia.

Russia stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Russia lands with a thumping leg kick.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Russia.

Petrov scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Petrov is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Russia defends it well.

Petrov wants to work for an arm triangle but Russia is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Russia keeping hold of Petrov's head, controlling as best he can.
Petrov tries to pass the half guard into mount. Russia knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Petrov is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Petrov is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Russia is looking to control Petrov's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Russia avoid being mounted?

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Russia gets caught flat footed, as Petrov shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Russia tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Petrov drops back, looking for a kneebar! Russia looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Russia looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Russia!
Petrov tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Russia wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Russia decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Russia shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Petrov napping and manages to drive through into side control!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Soviet Russia dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!



The fight moves into the clinch position.
Petrov drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Petrov tries for a takedown. No joy.

Russia gets control of Petrov's arms and successfully pulls guard. Russia will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Russia wants to stand up but Petrov is controlling him.

Petrov thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Petrov is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Russia is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Russia has escaped and now he's on top!

Petrov had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Russia defends it easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Russia thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Russia is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Petrov throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Russia wants to stand but Petrov has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Russia wants to control from the top but Petrov keeps moving.

Petrov looking for a triangle here. Russia is fighting it but it looks tight! Petrov pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Russia is tapping out - this one is all over!
