PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Le Petit Criss (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and August Derleth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Criss kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is La danse des canards. August Derleth has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Le Petit Criss's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Le Petit Criss!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, August Derleth!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Elvis Blanc and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Criss shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Derleth but Derleth pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Criss throws a right hand that Derleth ducks under and follows up with a left that Derleth also avoids with ease.

Derleth has Criss up against the cage in a clinch.
Derleth connects with a nasty looking knee right to Criss's face.
Derleth misses with a short punch on the inside.
Criss is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Derleth is defending well for now.
Derleth misses with some punches.
Criss lands a nice elbow.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Criss.
Derleth avoids a wild elbow strike from Criss.
Derleth lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Criss backwards.

Criss tries to land knees in the clinch but Derleth avoids the damage to the body.

Derleth escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Derleth throws a wild body kick that Criss sees coming a mile off.
Derleth feints and then cracks Criss's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Criss down.

Criss tries to circle away but Derleth has him pinned against the cage.
Derleth prevents Criss from breaking the clinch.
Derleth connects with a knee to the head.
Criss takes a knee right on the jaw!
Derleth blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Still in the clinch, Derleth scores with a nice short uppercut.
Derleth takes an elbow to the forehead.
Derleth with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.


Criss is rocked!
Derleth lands a knee to the head.
Oh Criss is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Derleth manages to break the clinch.
Derleth throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Derleth has Criss up against the cage in a clinch.
Criss misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Derleth.
Criss seems to have got his legs back now.
Derleth scores with a knee to the head.

Derleth escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Criss walks into a stiff left hand from Derleth.
Derleth scores with a nice head shot.
Derleth tries to clinch up but Criss circles away and keeps his distance.

Criss instigates a clinch.
Derleth scores a nice knee to the body.
Criss is looking to break free of the clinch but Derleth has double underhooks.
Derleth stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Criss's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Criss tries to score a power double leg takedown but Derleth sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Criss somewhat.
Criss fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Derleth scores with a nice right hand.

Criss takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Derleth is looking to clinch but Criss is avoiding it.
Derleth scores with a jab. Criss acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Criss wants to break the clinch but can't.

Criss pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Derleth rushes Criss and presses him up against the cage.

A frustrated look appears on Criss's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Derleth throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Criss is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Derleth lands an elbow inside.
Criss wants to break free but Derleth has control.
Criss tries to break the clinch but Derleth is controlling the position.
Derleth comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Derleth trying to control the position but instead, Criss has worked for underhooks and has pushed Derleth into the cage.

With the fighters up against the cage, Criss throws an elbow but misses.
Criss is trying to break the clinch but Derleth is controlling him.

Derleth breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Derleth lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Derleth ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Criss drops his hands momentarily and Derleth takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Derleth tries to bum rush Criss with a series of wild strikes but Criss uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Derleth wants to clinch but Criss slips to the side

and Criss counters with a shoot takedown. Derleth fights it but they end up in guard.
Derleth keeping moving, preventing Criss from controlling successfully.

Criss avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Derleth wants to get back to his feet but Criss is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Criss thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Criss postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Derleth is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Criss, into his guard.

Derleth avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Derleth really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Criss. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Derleth wants to stand but Criss is controlling his posture from full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

August Derleth dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Derleth pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Good exchange - Derleth coming out on top.
Criss avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Derleth moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Derleth cracks Criss with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Derleth misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Derleth digs a good hook to Criss's body.
Derleth throws a leg kick

and Criss counters with a shoot takedown. Derleth fights it but they end up in guard.
Criss pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Derleth is keeping the position for now.
Derleth is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Criss lands a couple of digs.
Criss throws and elbow that misses. Derleth uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Criss's guard. Nice move by Derleth!

Criss will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Derleth looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Derleth throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Criss had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Derleth defends it easily.
Criss looking for a sweep. Not yet Criss, not yet.
Derleth wants to get up but he can't break Criss's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Criss throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Criss manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Derleth manages to get himself to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Derleth wants to get back to his feet but Criss is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Criss trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Derleth manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Criss working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Derleth doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Derleth manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Derleth wants to control from the top but Criss keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Criss is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Derleth is aware though and is defending well.
Derleth wants to get up but he can't break Criss's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Criss tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Derleth has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Criss is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Criss keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Criss bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Derleth wants to get back to his feet but Criss is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Le Petit Criss dominated that second round.
That's time! Criss's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Criss drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Criss working away.

Criss is trying to get an arm triangle but Derleth is defending well.

Criss swings around for an armbar but Derleth sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Criss's guard.

Criss is not content to let Derleth control the position.
Derleth is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
It looks like Derleth is going to stand back up.
Criss makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Criss.

Criss working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Derleth doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Derleth manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Criss striking off his back but it's not causing Derleth any problems.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Criss trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Derleth tries to free his leg and advance position but Criss is retaining full guard.

Le Petit Criss overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Derleth is looking to stand up but Criss won't let him.

Criss might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Derleth sitting in guard here, content to control.
Derleth wants to stand but Criss has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Derleth looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Criss looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Criss has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Derleth can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Criss throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
