Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marvin Brown! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Valdema Severino! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Luis Engracia and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brown is looking to clinch. Brown throws a leg kick but Severino sees it coming and checks it nicely. Brown misses with a low kick. Brown is looking to clinch. Brown misses with a two punch combination.
Severino swats away the attempt to clinch by Brown. Brown displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Severino. Severino shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Brown is trying to defend but Severino finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Brown pushes Severino off looking to stand but Severino dives back in and keeps control.
Brown holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now. Severino missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Severino has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Severino thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Severino prevents Brown from standing back up.
Brown trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful. Brown blocking the ground and pound attempt from Severino.
That's one minute gone in the round. Brown trying to hold on to Severino's head to control him but Severino postures up.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Brown tries to close the distance and clinch but Severino swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. No luck with that takedown attempt from Severino. Brown doesn't succeed with the takedown and Severino counters with a single leg into guard. Brown didn't expect that. Brown has momentary wrist control but Severino slips an elbow through the middle. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Brown tries to land a sweep but no joy. Brown is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Severino is controlling him. Severino postures up.
Severino wants to control from the top but Brown keeps moving. Brown wants to sweep but no luck. Severino stops Brown from standing up. Brown is breathing heavily. Severino scoring with some ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Severino lands a couple of decent looking shots. Brown working a defensive guard but Severino manages to pass into side control anyway.
Severino cracks Brown with an elbow. That is naaassty. Severino is working to tighten is grip on Brown's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Brown has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Severino is really squeezing tight and eventually Brown passes out! Severino breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
