The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
velazques throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Herring's waist but Herring gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing velazques off to one side.
velazques is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
It looks like cain velazques has been cut.
A combination from Herring does no damage.
No joy there for Herring, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Herring throws a combination but it was largely blocked by velazques.
velazques shoots in for a takedown but Herring shows good takedown defense.

velazques drops his hands momentarily and Herring takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Herring avoids the head kick by velazques.
velazques leaves Herring with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

velazques takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
velazques changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Herring looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Herring is trying to improve his position.
Herring gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
velazques wants to lay and pray for a moment but Herring keeps working.

Herring gets full guard.
Herring has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes velazques off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Herring is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in velazques's half guard.
velazques wants to improve his position but Herring is controlling well.
Herring is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so velazques is just riding it out for now. Herring eventually gives up the hold.

velazques looks like he's trying to stand up.
Herring is trying to work for a kimura but velazques is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Herring throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Herring is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Herring is thwarting velazques's attempts to control the position.
Herring is trying to control. velazques wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Herring passes to full mount!
velazques knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Herring on the ground.
Herring goes for an armbar but velazques turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from velazques.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Herring fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
velazques gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Herring to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Herring drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but velazques manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Herring has velazques in his guard.

velazques stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Herring swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Herring wants to sweep but no luck.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Herring is on top in guard.
Herring wants to get up but he can't break velazques's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Herring is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! velazques is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! velazques has escaped and now he's on top!

velazques is keen to just control but Herring is a slippery customer.
velazques is stalling here. Herring is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! velazques seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Herring has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

velazques bucks up and tries to throw Herring off but instead Herring has got his back!

Herring tries to get the hooks in deep but velazques pushed the leg off.
