PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brian Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Boom Boom (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Go To Church. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn tests Boom's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Boom fails with an attempt to clinch.
Penn misses with a double jab.
Penn swinging wildly here.
Boom tries to clinch up but Penn circles away and keeps his distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Boom throws a hook to the side of Penn's head but Penn sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Boom doesn't manage to clinch there - Penn circles away.
Penn scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Penn swinging wildly here.
Penn fails to land with a series of punches.
Penn swats away the attempt to clinch by Boom.
Penn lunges at Boom with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Boom's hand.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Penn misses with the combination.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Boom tries to clinch up.
Penn throws a series of strikes that have Boom backpedaling.
Boom is looking to clinch but Penn is avoiding it.
Boom tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Penn swivels and escapes.

Penn keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Penn lands a head shot.
Penn lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Boom circles away quickly and effectively.
Boom is looking to clinch but Penn is avoiding it.
Penn throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Penn circles away from the clinch attempt.
Penn fails with a takedown attempt.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Penn lunges at Boom with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Boom's hand.
Penn shoots in but no luck this time.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Penn.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Boom wants to control but Penn postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Boom fails in his attempt to clinch.
Penn connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.

Penn shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Boom is controlling Penn's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Boom is trying to stand.
Boom is looking for a sweep. Penn is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Penn looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Penn throwing shots but Boom is blocking nicely.
Boom trying to control from the bottom.
Boom is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Boom wants to control but Penn is keeping busy.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Boom tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Penn feints and as Boom raises his hands in defense, Penn changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Penn is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Boom wants to sweep here but Penn controlling him for the moment.
Boom is looking to stand up but Penn isn't so interested in that idea.

Penn drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Boom dives on top into guard.
Penn has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Penn working for a triangle but Boom defends it easily.

Penn has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Boom is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Penn.

Boom decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Boom throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Penn was covering up waiting for the punch and Boom finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Penn looking for a guillotine here but Boom defends easily.

Penn throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Boom escapes and throws Penn's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Boom tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Boom really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Penn tries to bench press Boom off him but Boom keeps the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boom working the body and head with strikes.
Boom trying to control the position but Penn is working away.
Penn tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Penn manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Boom tries to pass the half guard into mount. Penn knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Penn is looking to improve his position.
Penn tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Brian Penn will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Boom is looking to clinch but Penn is avoiding it.

Penn shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Boom but Boom pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Penn lands with a good body shot.
Penn fails with a takedown attempt.
Penn is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Penn misses the shot to the body.
Boom looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

Penn fails to land with a series of punches.
Boom shoots in and drives through. Penn sprawls well.
Boom looks to clinch

and Penn counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Boom wants to stand up but Penn is controlling him.
Boom Boom has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Boom preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Penn with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Boom can do anything to dispel that myth.

Brian Penn overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Penn is looking to take a break and control but Boom is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
