PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Austin Taylor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derrick Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carter has chosen DJ Khaled - All I do is Win as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Austin Taylor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Derrick Carter!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Taylor drives through with a takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Carter has a closed guard, preventing Taylor from standing up.
Carter controls Taylor momentarily but Taylor frees himself.

Carter throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Carter wants to stand up but Taylor is controlling him.
Taylor wants to control from the top but Carter keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Taylor works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Carter wants to improve his position but Taylor is controlling well.
Taylor tries to pass the half guard into mount. Carter knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Carter works his way to full guard. Good work.
Taylor controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Taylor stands and throws Carter's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Taylor decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Carter looks gassed!
Carter swats away the attempt to clinch by Taylor.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Carter.
Taylor shoots in but Carter avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Taylor misses with a takedown attempt - Carter sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Carter throws a wild body kick that Taylor sees coming a mile off.

Taylor shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Carter is concentrating on defense, preventing Taylor from advancing position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Taylor tries to pass the half guard into mount. Carter knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Carter is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are battling for position here. Carter manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Carter has a closed guard, preventing Taylor from standing up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Carter pulls Taylor in close to prevent any damage.
Taylor has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Carter is proving hard to escape from.
Carter is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Well, if Carter is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Carter doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Taylor decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Carter's guard.
Carter has momentary wrist control but Taylor slips an elbow through the middle.
Taylor postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Carter working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Taylor doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Taylor manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Taylor lands a couple of digs.
Taylor controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Taylor has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Carter has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Taylor can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Taylor got a little sloppy there for a moment and Carter has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Taylor has managed to get both his arms back between Carter's legs - danger averted.
Taylor controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Carter looking to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Taylor with a nice head shot there.
Taylor trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Carter looking for a sweep. Not yet Carter, not yet.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Taylor closes the distance and pushes Carter back into the cage.
Taylor manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Taylor tries to score a body lock takedown but Carter shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Carter is pushing Taylor up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Carter breaks the clinch.
Taylor defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Carter.

Taylor clinches.
Taylor is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Carter tries to pull guard but Taylor won't allow it.
Austin Taylor has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Derrick Carter.
Carter tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Carter looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Taylor can't break the clinch.

Taylor manages to pull guard.

Taylor is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Taylor is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Carter misses with a takedown attempt

so Taylor counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Taylor is looking to advance position but Carter has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Carter working for a guillotine from mount but Taylor is in no mood to give up.
Taylor can't escape the position.
Taylor looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Carter trying to control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Carter missing with strikes from the back.
Taylor manages to reverse the position and now he's in Carter's guard. Nice work there by Taylor.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Taylor tries to keep at a distance but Carter has taken the fight into the clinch.
Carter tries to pull guard but Taylor won't allow it.
Taylor keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Carter's efforts to push away.
Taylor tries to pull guard but Carter holds him up against the cage and eventually Taylor drops back down to his feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Taylor looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Carter wants a takedown but no success here.
Austin Taylor has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Derrick Carter.
Taylor is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Carter putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Taylor in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Carter lands a good knee to the midsection. Taylor won't want to take too many of those.
Carter jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Taylor walks away with a smile on his face. Carter gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Taylor swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Carter.
Carter shoots and misses
and Taylor connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Taylor looks for the body kick but Carter saw that one coming.
Taylor lands with a shot to the body.

Carter clinches up against the cage.
Carter softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Taylor breaks the clinch.
Carter shoots and misses

and Taylor counters with a single leg into guard. Carter didn't expect that.
Carter is trying to control the position but Taylor postures up.
Carter thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Taylor wants to get up but he can't break Carter's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Taylor won't allow Carter to sweep him here.
Carter looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Taylor puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Taylor perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Taylor is taking a breather. Carter says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Taylor is just content to waste time from the top position. Carter takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Taylor is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Taylor trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Derrick Carter has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Austin Taylor is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Taylor has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Carter is proving hard to escape from.

Austin Taylor showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Taylor has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
