Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, James The Executioner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, MJ Penn! The judges for this bout are James Atkins, James Glass and James Ackerman.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Penn showed some decent athleticism there. Penn is working for a submission of some sort.
Penn is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so The Executioner is just riding it out for now. Penn eventually gives up the hold. Penn throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. The Executioner regains full guard. Nicely done. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Penn accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. The Executioner is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Penn preventing the sweep. The Executioner is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and The Executioner dives on top into guard. The Executioner makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Penn has his foot on The Executioner's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. The Executioner works his way back into a safe position though. Penn has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. The Executioner throws a strike but Penn rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. The Executioner is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as The Executioner holds on and takes a little breather. The Executioner trying to keep a closed guard but Penn is proving a slippery customer.
The Executioner wants to get back to his feet but Penn is in a dominant position and won't allow it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The Executioner wants to sweep but no luck. The Executioner really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Penn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. The Executioner is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Penn looks gassed! The Executioner prevents Penn from improving his position. Penn gets back to full guard.
The Executioner is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. The Executioner in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. The Executioner throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The Executioner is posturing up here but Penn has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! The Executioner tries to roll out but it's too tight and The Executioner has to tap! Slick submission there by Penn!
