PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Yrjo Pieru (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Panther (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Panther told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Yrjo Pieru!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Panther!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Gwen Towbar and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Panther shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Panther gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Panther wants to stand but Pieru is controlling the position.
Panther preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Panther is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Pieru working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Panther is wriggling around but Pieru manages to pass to half guard.

Pieru seems to be looking for submissions.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Pieru slips a nice elbow through Panther's hands, connecting with Panther's forehead.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Panther avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Pieru.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Panther can do anything to dispel that myth.
Pieru thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Panther's head.
Pieru is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Pieru is working for a submission of some sort.
Panther looks like he's trying to stand up.
Pieru sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Panther defending well though.

Pieru seems to be working for a kimura but Panther defends the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pieru thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Panther's head.
Pieru is keen to just control but Panther is a slippery customer.
Panther trying to control but Pieru postures up.
Pieru wants to pass to mount but Panther is defending the position.
Panther really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pieru. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Pieru chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Panther can pounce on him.
Pieru tries to clinch there but Panther circles away.
Pieru misses with a takedown attempt - Panther sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Pieru changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Panther looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pieru landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Panther wants to get back to his feet.
Panther managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Pieru.
Pieru lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Panther down.
Panther takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Pieru cracks Panther with a big elbow.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pieru scores with punches from side control.
Pieru has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Pieru working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Pieru wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Panther, who protects the arm well.
Pieru is breathing heavily.
Panther is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Pieru is chipping away with strikes.
Panther is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Pieru wants to take a breather but Panther manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Pieru.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Yrjo Pieru dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Panther throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Pieru darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Pieru connects with a nice short shot to Panther's temple.

Panther looks like he's trying to stand up.
Pieru tries to pass the half guard into mount. Panther knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Pieru passes the guard and advances to mount!
Pieru misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
You get the feeling that Panther really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Pieru thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Panther is trying to get back to his feet but can't.

Pieru avoids the attempt from Panther to control.
BOOM! Pieru connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pieru looking to control but Panther is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

You get the feeling that Panther really doesn't like being in this position too much.

Pieru lands a big shot there that rocks Panther but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Pieru trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Panther holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Pieru tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Panther is in a horrible position here. Pieru smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Pieru won't let Panther get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

Panther really wants to buck Pieru off and get back to his feet.

Pieru is working for a guillotine from mount but Panther frees his head quite easily.
Panther takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Pieru throws some wild stikes that Panther manages to avoid easily.
Pieru connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Pieru landing strikes from the mount and Panther is in trouble!
Panther is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Yrjo Pieru dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Panther stuffs the takedown.
An inside leg kick from Panther misses.
Panther tries to close the distance and clinch but Pieru swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Pieru fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Panther sprawls well initially but Pieru persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Panther tries to clinch but Pieru is having none of it.
John Panther is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Panther has managed to clinch.
Pieru wants a takedown.

Panther breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Panther stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Yrjo Pieru. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pieru shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Panther pinned against the cage. Panther gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Panther throws a nice looking combination but Pieru bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
John Panther has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Panther throws a leg kick but Pieru moved away.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Panther.
Panther is looking to clinch.
Pieru looks to score with a jab to the body but Panther is just out of range.
Pieru shoots for a takedown but Panther saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

and Panther counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Panther winds up and cracks Pieru with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Yrjo Pieru is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Panther landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

Panther scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Panther throws a strike but Pieru avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Panther connects with a couple of short punches.
Pieru wants to sweep here but Panther controlling him for the moment.
Pieru not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Panther wants to stand but Pieru is controlling his posture from full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

John Panther comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Pieru has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
